Passing out flyers isn't working. How else can I find customers?

Hi Guys,

So I started a flyer drop campaign last week and paid a few people to drop 6800 flyers around local area. The demographic is largely well paid professionals with families, and I'm selling camp equipment rentals.

My conversion rate is 0.16% of flyer to customer query. That said we are in strange times and perhaps people are sitting to see what happens lockdown.

What other kinds of marketing can I look at. I don't know much about IG/Facebook, are these worth it? What about Google?

Thanks

Two things stand out to me as potential challenges: Marketing Vehicle and Audience Segmentation

Regarding the Marketing Vehicle...this may not be what you're hoping to hear, but I can't think of the last time I looked at a flyer before tossing it. I'm a highly paid professional in the DC area, and if I see someone handing out a flyer, I politely decline. If I see it on my car, I tend to crumple it up before reading.

As far as the Audience Segmentation goes, the challenge with a shotgun blast like this is the lack of specific targeting. I'm not a great marketer by any means, so take this all with a grain of salt, but one of the benefits you get from online marketing is the ability to target people that have, somehow, expressed interest in your niche.

This is a great response, and I don't mind hearing the truth.

Funny that you mention that.. I am targeting well paid professional couples/families with disposable income.

I understand the shotgun approach, but have been reluctant to look at Google/Facebook.. perhaps I should try that out. I think Instagram could be doable.

Potentially IG/Google and not Facebook. I don't think my target market really use Facebook.

My wife is a heavy Facebook/Instagram user and interested in the outdoors.

One thing I'd consider: it's easier to be an answer to a question someone is already asking than it is to convince them to do a thing. A well-paid professional looking to get out and camp is different than a well-paid professional. I have disposable income, but would never spend it on camping. My wife, however, would love to.

A flyer to me is wasted, but to her is an opportunity. Instagram, Facebook, etc allow you to send your flyer to the folks already asking the question!

My experience is people looking to spend money will more likely Google for a particular thing whereas Facebook / IG users tend to browse adverts. Maybe I am wrong but that is what I have found in the past.

Hi, I'm doing content strategy so I will comment from this position, and without knowing what you're selling exactly.

With the current situation and the health risks connected with renting stuff that others have slept in - tents, sleeping bags - you may need some luck to actually sell something to well paid (and probably educated) individuals.

Now let's assume your target audience is not concerned for their health and is actually searching for camping equipment. The well paid professionals might be more interested in buying something than in renting it.

If they have families, so kids who might destroy the stuff, they might not be interested in renting it and having to pay for the potential damage afterwards. Are your terms and FAQs clear?

Now let's say they're well paid families but they still can't afford to buy the things. They should be able to afford renting it, so are you prices good enough for them? Are your messages & copy targeted to or excluding this audience?

A segment of the first audience is those who are well paid and aren't sure if they like camping, so they want to just rent the equipment once and give it a try. You might be able to attract them with an offer or a message along the lines of "Enjoy camping without buying all the stuff", or "Trying out camping for the first time? Rent our stuff instead of buying". But again, if you're going after families with kids, you might want to make the terms of use very clear.

Another segment is those who are well paid, are interested in camping, have families and don't have enough space to store equipment. To this audience you might want to market with a message along the lines of "Rent instead of buying, save space blablabla".

Where do you find these people? Well, if they're searching for stuff to rent, they're probably doing so on Google, or asking on Facebook if any of their friends has stuff that they can borrow for 1 weekend of camping or so. Or they might be in FB groups dedicated to parents / moms / campers, so you can start from there.

What product are you trying to market for?

Please see my response to @needgap - tldr. Renting camping equipment.

Hey Conor, I'm offering 3 seconds of free advertising on my project 24hourhomepage.com to any indie hacker who reaches out. If you're interested, shoot me an email at (24hourhomepage {at} gmail.com) and I'll set you up.

This is more of a creative ad-product though; I can't speak to other types of marketing.

I am renting camping equipment to families / couples who might like to get a holiday in this year. I think camping is one of the few activities that remains for a holiday this year. My deluxe pack offers all the trimmings and RRP/MSRP is about £4000 GBP, can be rented for a lot less than that.

I am helping people get access to camping equipment who may want to try it out, without having to invest heavily or find storage space for it all.
