Pay-pay-project vs subscription

Hey everyone,

Here’s my design startup story. I’d like to share it with you, tell you about the issues I faced and find out your opinion on this.

First of all, I had an ambition of creating a brand new design service with a solid team, strong portfolio and convenient pay-per-project charge system. I thought it could be useful for everyone who needs a particular design service and doesn’t want to pay for a whole month’s subscription. I’ve already had successful book cover design projects (MiblArt and GetCovers), so I’ve decided to start something new using my experience.

In my mind, my target audience was entrepreneurs, startups, marketers, agencies, etc., that could order designs for a specific project. The idea, I mean pay-per-project, seemed fresh and should set me apart from the competition.

Spoiler alert! I was wrong.

It turned out that customers were confused. They spent a lot of time on the website, but the option of per-project payment didn’t cause a stir. We believe, the main reason is that it’s much easier for potential clients to buy a subscription once and no longer have to worry about payment and choice of services.

So, after researching and test client involvement, we decided to switch the payment method to the familiar system of monthly subscriptions and unlimited design. We also offer unique services such as social media audits or creative support, but the scheme of building financial relations with clients is standard. There’re several subscription options and the ability of unlimited orders within the particular subscription.
