Payment processing - is everyone using Stripe?
By

I'm curious to know:
What payment processor are you using for your side project? (Stripe or other/multiple)?
Why did you choose this/these payment processor/s?
How & when did you find out about the payment processor you chose?
Thanks!
I've used Paypal, Gumroad and Stripe, in that order. Here are the advantages I've seen with each:
Fees are reasonable on all three.
Thanks @alchemist. good call. Do you recall how you initially heard of Stripe and Gumroad?
I initially heard of Stripe because I knew about the founder's previous company that was in YC, I'd read his comments on forums and Stripe was funded by YC.
I heard about Gumroad through Laura Roeder's discussion group.
You didn't ask, but I heard about Paypal because they offered me free money! 😆
Thanks! I didn't realize he had a previous company in YC. I will google this :) and who Laura Roeder is. very helpful thanks!!
And yeah how did this free money occur? I want some. Was it back in the day when no one knew them? I can't even imagine how long ago that would be.
We use Braintree as well; around half our customers prefer to use Paypal and Braintree has solid support for it. So far, so good.

No, I am using a combination of JS libraries:
For credit cards, I use a wrapper around the braintree JS library: https://github.com/nathanstitt/react-braintree-fields
For PayPal, I use the braintree JS library directly: https://github.com/braintree/braintree-web
I am pleasantly surprised by their documentation.
Paypal also have limaitaion in Taiwan, couldn’t let people exchange money online in country, but foreign to country works
Thank you Julie! Braintree is HQ'd in Chicago where I live :)
Second that!
Thanks guys! @dhruvg & @stan121 - for same reasons as Julie? Stripe not available in your country or other?
Yeah... Stripe is unavailable in my country, so we had no choice. Braintree support is awesome, though :)
Stripe is supported in my country, but my impression is that I'd have to implement Paypal separately and I didn't want to. Paypal support / docs is a mess. Braintree abstracts all that away.
Thanks! Helpful!

I didn't have to use the Paypal API, everything is handled by Braintree. As I already had the setup for credit cards, all I had to do was create a Paypal account, link it with my Braintree account and activate Paypal in the Braintree dashboard. And then very small changes in the code, but less than 4 hours of work in total.
IndieHackers is owned by Stripe so there may be some bias here.
If you're still working to establish credibility, offering Paypal as an additional option (but not the primary option) can help you earn a few extra sales.
Thanks max. I'd probably offer both for sure. My first project last year I used PayPal because I couldn't figure out how to do a one-time purchase on Stripe. It seemed like I could only do a subscription.
@nohaberia thanks! Do you recall how you heard of FastSpring initially? (read it somewhere, referred by a friend, etc.)
There was a great forum called Business of Software. Sadly, it's no more.
Was it basically like a review site? I know of G2 Crowd but I feel like they are mostly focused on enterprise software.
No, it was a community forum similar to IndieHackers but old school. We called ourselves M-ISVs (micro independent software vendors) at the time.
Ah, interesting. M-ISVs sounds very top secret.
Not nohaberia but I knew of BMT Micro, FastSpring and Share-it back when I freelanced for a micro-ISV business. They used Plimus.
Micro-ISV is the term for indie hackers back then.
Today most SaaS companies use the Merchant of Record model. Payment ISVs like PayPro Global handle not only payments but also sales tax/VAT remittance, compliance, lead generation, emails, licensing, invoicing, customer support and more.
Hi @lindsay_bizamo
I have to say the biggest drawback is the speed of the bank to bank transfers. Sometimes they can take up to 7 days. 😭 I know this isn't exactly like Stripe or Gumroad but I'd figure this may help some folks who want the convenience in the payment processing and the business side of things as well.
2Checkout - Stripe is not an option for non-us companies
thanks!
thanks!
Thanks @SendThatInvoice. My follow up for all is do you recall how you first heard of Stripe? I'm curious to know what resources are best for reading about this type of stuff or at least first hearing about it.
That's a good question. I first heard of Stripe back in 2011 or 2012, so it's been a while. I was building a lot of e-commerce sites back then, and I had a pretty good bead on various payment processors. But I don't think I could tell you exactly how I came across them.
thanks :)
Thanks @poodllguy. re: #3 - like you saw that Gumroad uses it as their payment processor?
So annoying when that happens!!
You found it when you were googling something like "payment processors" ?
Yeah, I believe I was communicating with a company out of Colorado first. Then, either googled their competitors or a term like 'online payment processors'.
thanks kevin! Do you remember how you first learned about it?

Interesting. Have you heard of And.Co? It's free and also integrates w/ Stripe.
