People in the US with a TN/H1b Visa - What did you do to be able to work on your side projects/startups?

I am currently working on a side project but I soon will be moving to the US to work for an SV company, it seems like working on side projects would be breaking the rules of this kind of visas. Has anyone had any experience with this situation?
