Personal Brand or Business Brand for your Youtube Channel name?

Which do you prefer?
My main goal is to have one single brand across platforms.
I'm still trying to figure out whether I should use a Personal Brand or Business Brand.

At the moment, My Youtube channel is called Data Engineer Buddy (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmIDPGT9SjjziPWeIN9iFrA/videos).

So far, I plan to talk about how code and nocode can help you manage your time and finances. I may release courses and/or products as well.

The advantage of a personal brand is that people feel like they're connecting with someone and you can also change your topic scope.
The advantage of a business brand, I think, is that its topic related and thus you can possible sell the brand in the future. Also, people don't have to like you to like your brand.

What have you deciding for your branding strategy?
Anyone had to rebrand?

I have a business brand called Web-Crunch (https://youtube.com/webcunch). Most people who watch my content still know me on a personal level. I think in the case of youtube it matters less on what the channel is named and more on the individual(s) delivering content.

If you're personable in your delivery it will come across in a more personalized approach. The same is true if it's business focused.

Brad from Traversy Media is a good example. 1.2 million subscribers yet more people refer to him as Brad instead of the channel branding. He told me recently ( I did a guest video on his channel) that he's trying to move toward a more business based approach since the channel has grown. That might be a good path to gain inspiration from. Grow it enough first and then consider. Just my 2 cents!

Hey Justalever! Thanks for the link, just subscribed.

Yes a friend said the same to me, "focus on delivering valuable content and everything else will fall into place. "

Interesting @ grow it first and then consider. That's sensible, I have no idea what the future holds so I can't get too hung up on it now. My channel is currently called 'Data Engineer Buddy' and I think it's too wordy at the moment.

I'll have a bit more thought and decide by the end of the week! :)

Maybe ask @harrydry he just renamed "marketing examples" to "Harry's marketing examples". I'm also really curious how it has been going for him.

      @alyhuggs

      you've summed it up well.

depends on your goal. are you tryna build $10M business or make $100k for yourself?

i think it's easier to build a personal brand than a business brand. people prefer people to brands!

as Jsc says i changed my Twitter to be slightly more personal.

i feel people are happier to retweet people than brands...

but... consistency is important. i also changed the icon to me. But people were so used to my purple icon the feedback was i had to change it back!

Hey @jsco, Thanks so much for linking to @harrydry and his brand rename!

@harrydry, you're right! Consistency is my number one aim. I appreciate that people feel connected to people more so than they would to a brand. I'm being heavily persuaded to use a personal brand now!

Did you change the name to Harry's Marketing Examples so that people can relate to you more and thus increase engagement?

Also do you think it matters if the name is after the 'brand' or before? e.g "Marketing Examples by Harry" vs "Harry's Marketing Examples"

I think you should go with your personal brand. The points you mentioned are valid.

It's interesting that I'm just about to ask the same question. I had some personal thoughts though:

    • For video content about lifestyle, experience, courses, especially on YouTube, I have a strong preference towards personal brand. More often than not, I subscribe to a YouTube channel because I like the personality of the YouTuber, which is unique. Although I came to a channel because of the content of 1-2 first videos, I usually tend to watch different videos of the same person to find out what more are interesting and working with this person. Although I don't explicitly say it, my consuming process is "Okay, this thing works with this guy, what's so unique about this guy that this thing works so well, what he did before, how he/she's developing it further", which only makes sense with a personal brand. I also feel like I establish a "relationship" with the YouTuber by subscribing to him/her.
    • When it comes to a business brand, I usually take it as a news, a TV show, or a service, which I have much less intention to keep a "relationship" with.

So I personally think YouTube works best for personal brands. I'm starting a YouTube channel, and a business brand, too. My plan on YouTube is "Hey friends, I'm Phuc, founder of X, I'm making videos about blabla", where I use YouTube to build my personal brand, which I use as a marketing & engaging channel for my business brand(s).

Brilliant! This naming thing has been on my mind for weeks really before posting here. Thanks so much for the response. Good point @ relationship. I'll keep this in mind, so far I'm being persuaded to use a personal brand and thus use my name in my channel name. It's currently called Data Engineer Buddy! Good luck with your channel and I'll follow your progress :)

Hope it goes well. I've seen some founder interviews and the theme was that their YouTube channel didn't take off till they had 1 viral video (which, in turn, boosted their other videos).

Thank you! Yes cracking virality whilst still being authentic and true to your purpose is the aim!
