Personal stock portfolio assistant: Asking for early prototype and idea feedback.

Hello everybody!

I'm Tomas and I'm building B2C app to help you create and manage your personal stock portfolio. I have a CS degree and I worked at medium-sized commodity trading floor for a few years as lead analyst.

The itch: For a few years I'm using a few portfolio optimization libraries written in Python to build and manage my personal stock portfolio. It is not a silver bullet for sure but over the years I added a few check to make sure that the portfolio is reasonable. I re-run that script every once in a while and update my portfolio. During that time quite a few people were interested in this because they manage their own portfolio but they were sort of winging it somehow (either because they didn't have enough knowledge or time). It looked like that the idea of having a tool that will help you create the portfolio and tell you if something doesn't look good sounded appealing to them.

My goal is to build an app that uses the same portfolio optimization techniques and guidelines I built into my script. The app should be very responsive and easily give you a good idea of what you can expect if you would go with such portfolio. It will also give you a way of steering the portfolio the way that you want. It will also have built in many heuristics that will give you a hint when the portfolio seems to have a systematic problem (like overexposure to a few stocks or a sector, having meme stocks, having high risk positions like Chinese stocks a year ago and similar).

Differentiation: The existing options of managing personal portfolios are on sort of two extremes. On one hand you can give your money to a bank/fund/manager how will for a (significant) fee allow you to participate in their fund. This has a drawback of being costly and too hands off for my liking. On the other hand you can pick your stocks manually and do everything yourself. This is obviously only for people who know what are they doing and have enough time on their hand to track recent development and do their own research. I think that this might be a good middle ground where you still have everything under control, don't have to pay management fees and be kinda sure you are not doing anything crazy.

I have built a prototype of the app. You can have a look here:

https://app.minsigma.com

It does the optimization and calculates some metrics for you so you can play with it. It does not have the heuristics implemented yet. There are only a few stocks in the database now so don't expect something that you should go and buy now.

I'd like to ask you for a feedback:

  1. Is this idea something that you'd be personally interested in using? Do you think you fit the customer profile I described?
  2. Did you manage to create a portfolio that you could use?
  3. Is the app simple enough to understand how could it be used?
  4. Do you have any feedback of the business idea itself?

Thank you in advance for the feedback. Keep in mind that it is just a prototype. You can leave your feedback here in the comments or drop me an email at tomas.krejci@minsigma.com. If you want you can give me your email at my landing page https://minsigma.com.
