Pickup Basketball Admin App

I'm currently building Run the Run, the app that helps pickup basketball Organizers manage their run more effectively. We're very close to launching. I'm non-technical, so I could only get it so far. I was able to use Claude Code to build a working beta for testing. It took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure out how to run a Terminal on my Chromebook to allow the use of Claude Code, but it was well worth it. I've now brought in a friend who is an actual developer, so the pace of improvements has increased dramatically.

I'll back up a bit. I've been running with the same crew for 15+ years. My dad has a key to our local high school, and he opens it up each Saturday for an early AM run. It's awesome. Every crew runs a little differently. We like to pick teams beforehand and do our best to keep it fair. As the organizer, this falls on my dad. He'll text my brother and me about teams, and we usually do a pretty good job. I know it's something he stresses about because he wants everyone to have a good time and not feel like a team got stacked, especially not his team.

This beta version is very basic. Right now, it mostly helps him organize the crew and make even teams. I think anyone who plays recreational sports or games of any kind can appreciate how much more fun it is when the games stay competitive rather than lopsided. That's our north star. How do we make the run the best it can be?

We have about 50 guys on the roster, but it's never the same 12-20 who actually show up on a given Saturday. My dad has been running our beta version for about a month now. I'm gathering feedback, adding features, and shelving ideas for the future. All the normal beginning stage things. We have a second pickup crew running their own pilot of the app and giving feedback as well. I love everything I'm learning from both.

If you want to check out runtherunapp.com to see what we're building, I'd love your feedback. I will readily admit that the current site and video are clunky. We're working on improvements as fast as we can. I can say that the tests we've done have made me fairly confident that the product has some value to a niche group. I'm excited to see how far we can go!

Love this, and the origin story is the whole pitch — your dad stressing about teams looking stacked, especially his own, is the product in one sentence. But I'd point at something you're underselling: the value isn't "organize the crew." Organizing is vague, calendars and rosters, lots of apps touch that. The sharp thing is the team-balancing, and specifically what it does for the organizer emotionally.

Here's the wedge hiding in your dad's stress: when a human picks teams, someone always suspects favoritism, and the organizer eats the blame. When the app picks them, nobody can accuse anyone. You're not really selling fair teams, you're selling social cover, the neutral third party that takes the heat off the guy with the keys. "Never get accused of stacking the teams again" is a sharper hook than "manage your run better," because it names a feeling every organizer knows and no generic sports-org app solves. The fairness is the feature; removing the organizer from the blame is the benefit.

That also makes your marketing weirdly easy. Every crew has exactly one organizer, the person with the key or the group text, and that person is both your buyer and the one who feels the pain. You don't need to reach players, you need to reach organizers, and they gather in findable places, rec-ball forums, r/basketball, local pickup Facebook groups. One organizer brings 12-20 players with them, so every customer is a little network.

Given all that: when your dad or the second crew's organizer describes what the app changed, do they talk about time saved, or about not having to defend the teams anymore? Whichever one they reach for first is your real headline.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I'll definitely use this in our marketing! My dad loves the time saved. The other crew has mentioned liking the teams selected a lot.
