I would love to hear Pieter say more about how PhotoAI got so big so quickly. I would assume it has something to do with his large audience, but that's by no means a silver bullet in terms of user acquisition.
From what I've seen, it's a combo of huge Twitter following + inherently viral product esp. when it launched and AI photoshoots were new + it's been written about and linked to from many many many places.
Pieter is obviously massively successful, but he's admitted that this is all from the Lex Friedman podcast. So if you want to emulate this particular success, just get on one of the most impactful podcasts for techies :)
He's a thought leader and influencer in indie hackers. Just consider how can it be possible to have everyone talking about one topic after another topic. You can find him leading the wave of air-fryers, steak cooking, weightlifting, creatine and many other topics.
He is an oustanding coder, who leverages the latest tools
yeah PHP and jQuery is cutting edge.
He's been a phenomenon in the indieHacker space.
Will be fascinating to see if/how he's able to sustain the momentum the Lex Fridman interview gave him
There's hardly anyone as good as him at execution. With so many alternatives around, many of which have raised VC, he has still managed to turn it into such a big success.

PhotoAI seems like a perfect fit for Levels as an indie hacker, because it's such a visual product. Unlike most other apps, updates to PhotoAI are actually interesting to see. Plus it's B2C. The perfect pairing for an indie hacker influencer with 500,000 followers.
Another thing that he managed to do really well was get press coverage early on which helped him earn some very high authority links. The result is that almost 50 percent of the traffic today comes from search engines. Having the keyword in domain also helps.
