Pivot: Teaching almost entirely w/visuals

Well, I’ve made another pivot on TokyoSpark: https://tokyospark.com/

Partly because the last 4-5 Google core updates decimated my organic traffic. TokyoSpark having been travel/destination niche, seems Google is crushing this industry right now.

So I’ve moved to teaching. But through design... because I’m also tired of writing, and writing, and writing...

So I teach Tokyo, Japanese culture, and language through visuals now.

I call them sparks — succinct knowledge snacks. ;p

Curious what you think.

I’ll be following up on this post with more info about, why, how, results, etc...

Take care,

It's a nice project and I just learned something @Chaddeus

But I'm curious why do you think Google's updates have an impact on your traffic, would love to hear any evidence.

      Thanks!

I’d say it’s mostly anecdotal... I lurk in a few “traffic” FB groups where most of the bloggers are in the travel/destination niche.

It gives me a pulse of when something is happening.

And when things do, I check my stats too... and it seems mine echo what others were seeing. 50-70% drops in traffic.

Nothing scientific. And if I dug in, I could potentially discover it was a certain few articles dropping, etc...

I did do some comparison searches, looking over the articles that overtook mine for the terms I was aiming for — and I found many were Google properties.

Google has been really pushing into the travel space of late... and it’s got a lot of the travel blogger upset. 😳

Some reporting very low-quality (but Google owned) articles winning top spots now — seems Google has started paying a series of travel writers to crank out articles as fast as possible (while incorporating data from Google Maps).

So I pivoted... don’t want to be in that sinking ship and teaching others new info, skills, etc... is where it’s always going to be at.

      Thanks for asking.
