Please give us a way to get in an IH videocall (permalink, and show no. of people in the call)

I just spoke with @vayer about this. There's IH Worldwide, but they charge money to attend each of their meetings. Yeah, no. I'm running RiteKit for nine years; I'm paying you to network with those at it 3 months...? I would be happy to give and take help from fellow founders, but not up for paying for the privelege.

I think it would be great if there was a widget on the IH site that gave a link to a videocall (permalink) and showed how many are in the call whenever we check it. If it got busy, there could be a couple rooms, even.

More ideas - if @rosiesherry or @csallen care to talk. I'm more talker than typer, and suspect there are many others that are as well. I do respect that with no "skin in the game," as I explained to Vivek Ayer, people become takers. They only show up when they are in want, never to give. I learned that by running a startup mastermind group (free) for 18 months. So, I don't have a perfect solution.

I do contend that we'd be far more open to sharing real truth if we were speaking; a hell of a lot of the advice I read in Community and the deception from founders in the interviews... I get it. You can't tell the world that your startup is in trouble. You can't tell the world how you really treat refund requests. You lie through your teeth about how to succeed in Reddit and pretend Producthunt does not play favorites, gives us all a fair chance. I get it. You need to protect your growing business. But if we were to talk, I believe we'd be much more open to give-and-take real help from those really in the trenches.

Hey Saul, great to connect. I can promise to do my utmost to attend an event.

@rosiesherry thanks for your reply below. These past 2 weeks have been quite heavy for me, a POC, living in a largely white country (Norway). Could we have an Indie Hacker event to celebrate BLM? Specifically focusing on startups that address inequalities in society? I would hope this includes all members not exclusively POC.

Hey. Would you like to jump on a call?

No promises, an event is a big undertaking, but maybe we can throw some ideas around?

Or as a way to do something 'now' I can arrange a small group discussion around it/BLM?

        Id love to. When works??

Depends if you just want to chat (with me), or organise a small group. Any preference?

Id love a 5 min chat ...if anything because I miss hearing a British accent :)

I have time now...for the next 3 hours (until 3pm London time). Email me (it's in my profile) or DM me on Twitter.

I can't comment on the requested feature, but with a background in communities and events I don't see how it will fix your problem. Mostly because of coordination and marketing/awareness reasons.

There are some really hard things about events in this context:

    • getting people to commit to register
    • getting people to show up (even more so when it is free)
    • getting the word out that it is happening and of value (marketing)

I have been organising meetups online. They are small and themed (Indie Women, No-Coders, Marketing. Freelancers and Newsletters one coming soon.) I'm coordinating them atm, but it doesn't scale with just me organising it so my plan is to make it so that people can do themselves. Of course, anyone at the moment can do them themselves, but it's hard to get people convinced and show up. If there is a themed event you'd like to see happen then let me know.

Sidenote: there are free tickets with IH worldwide, I just got myself one.

Thanks for such thoughtful feedback. I, too, had trouble getting ppl to commit. I'd get 15 saying "yes" and 35 "maybe" to a Google+ Hangout Event - and four would show up. Yeah. So the answer is a permalink, and we join through our home : the Indiehackers site.

Getting the word out: We all pitch in. When we talk, I can share what I do.
