Poems for 6th Graders

Hi everyone! If you're teaching 6th grade or supporting middle school readers at home, you probably know that this age group is ready for more meaningful, thought-provoking poetry—but still needs texts that feel approachable and engaging.

I recently put together a curated list of 20 poems for 6th graders, ranging from classic poets to modern voices. Each poem comes with:

A short explanation of why it works well for 6th grade

A 3–4 sentence teaching tip to help with classroom discussion

Ideas for introducing concepts like symbolism, tone, theme, and figurative language

Suggestions for creative activities (visualization, journaling, comparison, etc.)

The collection includes poems that spark discussion, build comprehension, and encourage students to connect poetry with their own experiences. It’s especially helpful if you’re planning a poetry unit, prepping for reading assessments, or just looking for new ways to make poetry fun and meaningful.

You can find the full list here:

Hopefully this helps anyone building a poetry lesson plan or searching for strong texts to challenge 6th-grade students. If you're using any favorite poems of your own in class, I’d love to hear your recommendations too!
