Post your startup in the comments and I'll offer marketing advice

**EDIT 4 - 8/20 Done - 08/20/2018 *

EDIT 2 - Sorry for delay here. 100% happening. Some family stayed round and delayed me. Going to do tomorrow. Sorry :)

EDIT - Awesome . Thanks for posting. Will be doing this tonight. Start at 9pm GMT. I probably can't do any more than 20 so gonna have to call time on this 🙏

I've had a tonne of support from this community since I signed up two years ago. People even rewrote the code for my dating app when I lost hundreds of photos. So I'm offering up my services as a thank you.

In the comments

  • your website
  • who your audience is
  • what you're currently doing marketing wise.

And sometime tomorrow I'll reply telling you how what I would do in your shoes. The more the merrier so everyone welcome to offer advice :)

But Harry, are you really a marketing expert?!
I guess we'll find out tomorrow 😂

  1. 3

    Hi Harry! Thanks for this.

    Website: https://unread.it
Target audience: Reddit readers and newsletter lovers
    Current marketing effort: 😬

    1. 1

      Lots going right:

      • Landing Page is good ✅
      • Each newsletter has its own url ✅

      Ideas for improvements:

      • Every single newsletter should be being shared on the relevant subreddit. This is really low hanging fruit. And should at the least be tested. How you do this is you copy out the full newsletter with links onto each Subreddit and then link your own newsletter at the top or the bottom. Here's an good example how Pat does it.

      • Every time you see a Reddit post that you want to add to your newsletter. Comment on the post. Say, "Great post. I write a newsletter summarising the best posts of the week. Have just added this one ... " Writing comments is really underrated on forums like Reddit.

      • You need content to share yourself. Start interviewing the best people from the newsletters. I'm feeling, Humans of Reddit vibe. This means you have your own content which you can share round.

      • Talk about what you're doing much more. For your entrepreneur newsletter / indie maker newsletter there's so much you can do. Here's two quick wins: Introduce yourself on Startup School forum (sign up). Post more milestones to Indie Hackers. Getting top of Indie Hacker milestones is a legitimate Marketing Strategy. See how much I post on my IH product page

Thanks so much for this in-depth reply. You are seriously on top of your game.
I’ll try to put into practice everything you said.

        1. 1

          Glad you liked it!

    Hi Harry!
    Thanks for your time!

Website: https://sugarkubes.io (We allow developers to monetize GitHub repos)
    Audience: Developers
Current Marketing Efforts: Mostly writing blog posts. It's not working well.

    1. 2

      Really cool idea!

Just a suggestion - maybe you should cold-email owners of repos you think would be interested?

      1. 1

Thanks! I filed issues on about 20 repos and got a toooonnnnn of haterade. But that might be the norm, just need to find the one in 100 willing to do it!

        1. 1

Haha yep, I guess that's how it is, gotta find those who'd wanna monetize. Really cool idea though. Also read your Medium article on running AI on edge devices, very interesting :).

          1. 1

Thanks! Running AI on the edge is my day job. It's an enterprise security and surveillance product.

            1. 1

btw, just happened to see this amazing project which is open source on github and I know is currently looking into monetization. had the chance of using their software personally, perhaps they'd be interested.

              https://www.trufflesuite.com

              1. 1

Thanks for the link! I'm not above asking but the Truffle guys are all about web3. They'd rather lose a leg than charge $ USD for their project.

Although that does bring up a good point, perhpas people should be able to sell their projects using BTC or ETH ( or some other token) instead of only USD. I like that idea!

                1. 1

Haha that's a good idea too I guess. but I used to work for a crypto company before and we used their suite. If they would've charged $ for it we would've paid hands down.

    2. 1
      1. I agree with @gballas. Cold outreach. But try framing your outreach as if you're asking for advice and not directly selling. See this article. That way you can chat developer to developer and not salesman to developer. There's a massive difference.

This also gives you a great way to validate and hone the idea. Start off with the same template and just add a couple of personal lines in for each developer / repo owner ...

And yeah, this is going to absolutely suck. But you've got to try direct stuff.

Listen to the first ever Indie Hackers Podcast for tips on being direct and scrappy

      1. Launch a side project /repolist, to Product Hunt. Basically a list of the best open source git hub repos. Put it behind your own url. This will suck people into your website :)

      2. Just share in a load of places: Reddit / HN / Indie Hackers. Find a list of Tech Slack groups and share there.

      3. People are asking about this on Quora. So answer every single question that comes up. And obviously link your product each time.

      1. 1

thanks @harrydry appreciate the ideas. Love the list idea, will give that a shot.

  3. 3

    👏👍

    Pod Hunt (https://podhunt.app)

    • Podcaster hosts and podcast listeners
    • Nothing! Soft launch is coming on Tuesday 😀
    1. 2

      I really like it.

In addition to the daily upvote section. You want to create content surrounding the best podcast submissions. Essentially content marketing.

Podcast Notes has grown to 30k twitter followers in around a year summarising the best podcasts out there. But proper really good summaries.

So I'd say, for the top 3/5 podcasts submitted that day you want someone to write a summary twitter threads. Look at this for a good example.

Two reasons why podcast notes twitter grew:

      1. Because you can tag people. So they'd be tagging @naval etc ... and then they'd RT
      2. Because you can reply. Imagine Ryan Hoover drops a podcast. He tweets about it. You then post your summary under the tweet. He gets a notification. He then retweets your summary. Or he retweets a tweet in your thread summary.

Pretty funny really. You've just asked for advice and I've just banged on about Podcast Notes. But honestly, copy what they're doing. just two kids and you'll be fine.

      What else, hmmm.

      Launch to Reddit podcasts.

Use your PodHunt twitter account to tag people when someone submits their pod. So for example, I see Pat Walls Indie Hacker podcast up there. So you should do a Product Hunt esque tweet saying, "@thpatwalls, you're podcast has been submitted to ..."

The genius behind PH is that entrepreneurs flock to the site because they want to promote their products. In doing so they drag their twitter followers / fans with them. So if you could somehow get into a position where people are, "launching" podcasts on PodHunt then that would be awesome :)

      1. 1

Thanks man, already started doing some of the things you mentioned 😀

        1. 2

Pleasure's mine. Enjoyed your ep on the IH pod a while back.

I'm posting Marketing Examples on Product Hunt tomorrow. Maybe we'll get the top two spots if you're launching there.

          1. 2

Very cool, I'm holding off the PH submission for a week or two.

Got a few things on the roadmap I'd like to get done before the go wide launch.

    2. 2

Cool idea. Especially with how hard it is to find podcasts! Hope it goes well!

      1. 2

Thanks Noah, very excited for this one!

    https://www.manypixels.co

Audience: Online entrepreneurs that have profitable businesses and web design agencies

We're mostly doing cold outreach at the moment

    1. 2

I think the key is to build authority as awesome designers.

How'd you do this? Build a big audience. If Steve Schoger launched this service he'd be a multimillion by now.

I'd just copy a lot of how he built his audience. I think the direct route is great, but and will get you to 20k / mo pretty nicely. But audience building might scale better. In terms of the specifics here's exactly the content I'd make on each platform. Just copy this and do it your own way:

I'm only pushing audience building because for design it's actually a great niche to build an audience in. Far easier than marketing / developer blogs.

      Great places to post are:

I'd recommend listening to these two podcasts:

      1. Art of Product with Adam Wathan
      2. One Page love ewith Steve Schoger

      Both just go into lots

I think the illustration gallery you guys made was fairly cool. I imagine you put it on Product Hunt? If that worked well more side project marketing such as a free icon pack may go down well.

And finally, weird one but something I realised at my old company. It's really easy to rank in google for font related articles ...

We wrote this bullshit about Europa Free Font and it picks up organic traffic from google every month. So if you're into SEO churn out some pieces about font. Particularly free front as that's what people search for. One keyword per article. And try and rank in Google ...

If direct sales is working no need to change it up. just some ideas :_)

  5. 2

Hey, I'm stuck with https://waitfeed.com - would really appreciate for some advice regarding marketing possible todos around this.

Was trying to play around with content marketing and also Twitter - no big success...

Target audience is people who want to stay up to date with upcoming stuff (mobile phones, movies, games, electric cars and etc.) they are interested in.

No monetization, no ads, just want to make useful website to bring value for people visiting it.

    Thanks.

    1. 1

@vaitko Really impressive coding on this.

To be honest. This is the first one that has me really stuck!

The problem you've got is you're trying to target everyone. And this sort of means you end up targeting no-one!

A lot of what low budget marketing is, is finding your niche audience and telling them about your product / offering them value so they hear about your product!

It's far easier to get traction in niche markets because:

      • Audience, press, and influencers are easier to access
      • Hardcore fans will help share your product

This is a massive oversimplification but look at Indie Hackers. They shared with Hacker News and got initial growth. My Kanye West dating site. Shared with Kanye fans and got growth. I've wrote a Twitter thread about this concept.

So yeah, my marketing advice would be this is a really tough idea to make work unless you have a team and £100,000! I love the concept, but I'd tweak it so you just focused on one thing. For example, same exact concept but for video games ... would be so much easier to market.

      You could:

      • run ads aimed at video games lovers
      • launch the product on video game forums
      • get interviews with people in the video game space and promote them

And then if you capture theat market, then you can expand. Good luck :)

      1. 1

Harry, big thanks! I was already considering that, and asked already the community here that probably it would make sense to go for a niche. You're 100% right. I felt all the complexity when trying to spread a word for "everyone" it's really complicated to choose the people you want to talk to about this. Btw games section was my first choice, because it currently brings the most traction if comparing to tv series, movies or smartphones, did you suggest games randomly or there was smth in between? ;)

  6. 2

Pretty nervous to put this out for feedback like this but....

    • Gamers who want to keep track of everything they are playing/want to play, and see what their friends are playing, etc.
    • Mostly just watching keywords on twitter and interacting daily. Also started a subreddit recently.
    1. 1

Cool site man. Subreddit is a good idea. I think there's opportunity to share your Subreddit round. I know @diannamallen's had some success with https://www.reddit.com/r/BudgetMealPlans/. So perhaps look at that for inspiration.

You need to pull people into your website UPFRONT. Currently you have to signup. And if you don't signup then you bounce. So I'm thinking you need to create useful content and pull people in. Essentially more audience building. It's really hard to build a community without free upfront value. Look at Indie Hackers / Product Hunt / Game Quitters. All communities started with upfront value

      • Write blogs about each game. Turn into twitter threads and share (Like I do on my twitter) Then you also post these blogs where your community hangs out. Reddit / Random other watering holes ...

      • Something like a YouTube channel. I know it's a really generic suggestion, but I'm just thinking of ways you can build your audience and that's one.

      • Allow indie devs to submit games and have them upvoted. Perhaps try and turn it into the Product Hunt for games. Idea is that this pulls people back in. The genius of Product Hunt is that entrepreneurs flock to the site because they want to promote their products. In doing so they drag their twitter followers / fans with them.

So if you could get indie game devs posting their games on your site and simultaneously tweeting a link so there audience upvotes your onto a winner :)

      1. 1

Thanks for the feedback! This is all really good :D

The only thing I'll push back a little bit on is, the game database is fully searchable without signing up, so there is at least something there. You don't have to be a user to get any of the game info, just to keep track of your collection, write reviews, etc.

        1. 1

Yeah, right you are, I was definitely wrong on that one :)

The design on this site is absolutely amazing. Should be really proud of that! I saw CyberSheff is doing a piece about you. Congrats.

Perhaps even some cold outreach to "influencer types" asking if they'll share. You don't even have to directly ask. Could just introduce yourself.

Also, I'd say focus on finding your tribe. Where do all these game folk hang out. Twitter / Reddit / A Bigger forum / a bigger site. Just become really popular on their by offering lots of help and you'll get rewarded!

To quote a few lines from my last case study:

The point is that once you start hanging with your perfect audience, conventional marketing goes out the window. You don't have to try so hard. Find the place where your tribe hangs out. Show up, help people out, talk about what you're doing, and the rest will take care of itself.

    2. 1

Hey, is there any way for people to submit new games to your collection? I have a game called Danger World (https://danger.world) that I'd love for you to consider.

      1. 2

Hey there! So currently I'm using a third-party database for all the game info, but you can submit it there and it will then be syndicated into GG|.

        You can submit it here👇
        https://www.igdb.com/games/new

        1. 1

          Thanks! I'll get it submitted.

    An Online Photo Watermarking tool.

My audience are photographers, small business owners, real estate etc...

Thank you for your time and suggestions.

    1. 2

      Nice product.

Firstly, off the top of my head I think SEO runs the show here. And yeah, some research on Ahrefs shows that's some good search volume here! People essential google, "Free Watermark" and click on the first thing in the list ...

Currently you're at around number 7. With seemingly minimal effort.

So you want to do some keyword research learn about SEO and try and rank better. Just as a quick one, from my quick research it looks like, "Free watermark" may be a better keyword to target than, "online photo watermarker"

In terms of ranking better one easy thing would be to start a blog. I notice your competitor Watermarkly has one. All their doing on their blog is just targeting more keywords. For example this blog here it's all about how to custom position a watermark. It's just a really average piece of content, but it does mean that if anyone googles, "custom position my watermark" ... hey presto they show up on the search.

If you want to know more about keyword research, I've wrote a pretty comphrensive article here

I'd also recommend Glen Alsop on the Smart Passive income podcast, and also the episode they did with Ahrefs.

Also, I think you're priciing is too low. But that's for another afternoon. You'll have to sell a hell of a lot at those prices to make a lot of money. But I don't know the market, so maybe that's possible. Try and make your product double as good and double your prices.

But you're main focus should be copying Watermarkly. And getting more of an SEO presence. Organic traffic is the dream because once it's there you don't have to work so hard for i. Good luck :)

      1. 1

Thanks alot, it's very valuable. I started on blog, will seriously consider your advice on keywords.

I will look into those articles.

    My startup: https://chatsilo.com

It's a mini CRM for facebook messenger.

I just completed the landing page and I'm soft launching it on Monday.

    1. 1

      Congrats on the soft launch:

      • Re-record your demo video. Make it shorter, remove the horrible ad on the top left, and add a voiceover / backing track. It's currently 6 minutes without sound. I just don't think anyone can sit through that.

      • Try direct sales. Copy what @patwalls is doing marketing Pigeon Lots more direct stuff.

      • I think offering fairly low prices as you are. It's going to be a long slog. You might attract a lot of small fried people without money. You're better off improving your product, increasing your prices tenfold, and directly pitching bigger business'. Essentiallyyou'd rather have one business paying you $100 / mo. Than twenty individuals paying $5. Purely from a customer support perspective. Also, higher prices free you up to do more direct sales. With low prices it's hard to justify cold emailing and calling.

      • So yeah, target business' on facebook directly. That can't be that hard. That's tonnes of them. And message them. I'd also use Jason Cohen's direct sales approach of offering to pay for their time. But this will only work, if you raise your prices and record a much better demo video!

Good luck. I think you can do it :)

Gets good feedback and high conversion to subscribers when I do outreach. But, I need to figure out something to grow faster.

Hi! I'm with thegoodstartup.com, and I'm targeting people working in tech and startups who care about social impact and the environment. Haven't done much for marketing yet besides branding and building a pre-launch email list. Would really appreciate any advice, especially in getting that early stage traffic. Not sure what sources to go to and where to reach out!

    Website - https://apps.shopify.com/whatsapp-chat-button

Audience - Shopify store owners from developing nations/countries where WhatsApp has significant popularity (ex - Brazil, India, etc.)

Current marketing - Ranking on Shopify app store for relevant keywords (ex - "WhatsApp") by using a combination of optimizing app name, description, screenshots, and generating high-quality authentic reviews

Would love to hear your ideas!

AdiPosse a social body weight tracker for iPhone.

My audience is individuals trying to lose or gain weight who don't mind others knowing what they weigh.

I’ve been trying to build my instagram, but that’s slow going so far, up to 100 followers. Also DMIng insta influencers and instagram coaches.

I’ve emailed a few iPhone app blogs with no luck so far.

    Sounds good...

    your website:
    app (main traffic source): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.personizer.application
    website: personizer.net

who your audience is: call out contractors (tradesmen, mobile hairdressers, mobile masseuse, landscapers, anyone who wanst to use their contacts as a quick and dirty crm).

    what you're currently doing marketing-wise:
Majority of traffic comes organically within the Google playstore.
A little comes through the content i've posted on the websites blog.

Main problem is lack of customer feedback and poor retention. Maybe I should just focus it as a Notes for Contacts solution (for businesses)?

Hello, how kind of you !

    • My website / PWA - colorsandfonts.com
    • A tool for web developers and digital designers.
    • I post the new palettes and gradients every monday on Instagram and Dribbble.

Right now I have from 100 to 200 users daily but I have been like this for a couple of months since I launched on PH and many others.

I can't find the way to get more users.

Thank you so much for your help, I appreciate marketing advice very much. My marketing skills are not the best

    • My website is https://snoozeyoulose.io
    • My audience are people who care about their productivity
    • Currently we are trying to build up hype for the live stream of us launching it. We are building the product in 24 hours so we can get it out there to get feedback as quick as possible. And we are launching it to Product Hunt and Hacker news the 11th.

It will be interesting to hear what ideas you have or what ways you think we could get more people to try this so we can validate the idea!

    Thanks for any help @harrydry
