Potential first client asking for examples...
I have my first potential client, and they want to see examples of work I've done. While I've done work that is similar and am confident I can do the job, I don't have a portfolio yet (well, not one that I'm able to show as a freelancer).
What's a good response that gives them confidence without the examples they would like to see?
If I had been in your place (been there) - i would have built up a rough prototype and showed them the same to prove it and in the mean time been honest about my reason.
It really worked for me in the initial days.
Do you have anything not directly related to the job you can show? Something is always better than nothing.
We had a designer interview once that offered during the interview to show some of their personal digital artwork.
Even though it wasn't directly related to the work they'd be doing, it demonstrated skill with the tools they'd be using, attention to detail, and their ability to create things that were really eye catching.
Could you not show them the example of the similar work you've done?
I would just be honest with them, and let them know that you're getting the gig off the ground. Perhaps in exchange for them being the proverbial "guinea pig" you can offer them a discount.
Yes - was honest that this was early days (weeks) and shared the principles I wanted to follow in running a business (provide such good service that they want to tell their friends!).
The next day I received an email that they were keen, and proposal approved today!
