Pricing eCommerce SaaS: Pay-as-you-go % or Subscription?

Lots of folks here are selling services or digital products as their main or side gig and I'm curious to know your perspective on pricing.

This always is a hot topic (no need to go further than a recent discussion on Gumroad pricing), but the discussion is somewhat skewed towards high-volume sellers.

So let's put the question this way. Imagine that for your volume on average both pay-as-you-go and subscription-based pricings for the same product cost you the same. Given that, would you choose:

  1. Pay-as-you-go % pricing
  2. Monthly subscription pricing

I had some conversations with users of our product and noticed that people tend to have an optimistic outlook on their sales, overestimate the volume, and tend to see pay-as-you-go percentage pricing a bit less favorable. So I decided to ask the community here!
