Product Hunt is useless in 2023

I know the title is clickbaity, but let me explain. If you are not in AI or a notion template, expect product hunt to result in limited traffic, and at that very low quality. For one much of product hunt is filled with customers from relatively poorer countries, basically pricing them out. Beyond that, immediately after my launch I received messages asking me to purchase upvotes. Obviously, my results from the launch show I didn't follow through but you can imagine how many launches do a day. Even my comment section was botted with random AI products promoting with no relevance to what I posted.

You can check it out here, dont even worry about upvoting just check the comment section. https://www.producthunt.com/posts/investor-radar?utm_source=badge-featured&utm_medium=badge&utm_souce=badge-investor-radar

The problem with Product Hunt (and with IndieHackers and similar others, alike) is not the cheap traffic.

The issue is, the main persona going there is you and those like you, people that have a business running and want to validate/promote. The problem is in itself. You can't expect to grow a business by simply showing it to other business creators. Sometimes it works, yes. But most of the times, it needs a totally different audience. If you go to a market to sell cucumbers, tomatoes and other vegetable, you don't pitch them to other sellers like you, right?

And yes, I get it, PH is a 2 sided marketplace. But I think this is past tense. Nowadays, 90% of its users and creators and not actual people hunting down good products. Which will eventually lead to your kind of PH results.

    Good luck!

    1. 2

What is your advice for self promotion then. Especially when wanting to keep extreme frugality in mind.

    2. 2

Hi, I agree with you 100000%
It seems to me that there are 90% makers on Product Hunt, so to think that they can buy your product - is not true. But it's a way to show your product, to get feedbacks and yes, the makers can be your customers also. I think that there is no bad way to tell aout your product. SOme of them are very useful, some of them not. But it's not zero

    3. 1

Agreed, these platforms are more about support and sharing knowledge, not advertising. You still have to know where your target audience is.

      1. 2

Exactly. In my opinion, they are simply to share knowledge so that others can do it faster or not even faster but to have a clue. And that's about it.

But apparently, people (new entrepreneurs), they all do the same 2 big mistakes of:

        1. use these as advertising instead of a knowledge base
        2. believe all the hype around AI and fail miserably. I mean I think I've seen at least a dozen 'startups' every week, all doing an extremely small thing/feature, based off of GPT. lol
  2. 5

well, it gives you an amazing >90 dofollow backlink - unless stuff like this doesn't matter to you :)

    1. 2

this is what I use it for, I did my launch in 30 minutes because I just needed a strong back link.

      1. 2

Yeah that is an extremely valid use case.

    2. 1

You can also share that you've been featured on Product Hunt. That along with reddit and launch YC lets you say "as seen on" and add three recognizable logos with much less effort than getting media mentions.

or sometimes your users are not on the platform.....

  5. 2

it's been useless for long,...but is fine to get a not awareness....😅

  6. 2

I found this post just minutes after listing my SaaS there. I don't know whether I got good results or not, but in my opinion, because listing the product there is free, there's no harm in trying it :)

  7. 2

You get a backlink and a few dozen eyeballs in exchange for a little bit of your time.
I think it is a fair trade if you lower your expectations.

  8. 1

    I totally agree with you.
A year ago I thought in another way. I was excited to show my product to the community.
But, for now, despite ASObot receiving Product of the Day on October 13, 2023
There is no more about quality.

Bots, dead accounts without activity, people posting strange feedback not about my launch at all. There are a lot of messages that I have to buy upvotes to move up.
Almost 1k upvotes, only 200 new users & 2 payments.

  9. 1

I think a lot of this boils down to finding your users in the channels they reside. Are your target users on Product Hunt? If not, what quantifiable value do you think you have to gain from launching there? Could your energy be used on other avenues with better ROI?

I've noticed that some Product Hunters (not necessarily you, just in general) approach PH as a way to get quick and/or viral traction. That may have been true ages ago, but now because (imo) a lot of PH's traffic is other builders, so it's much harder to get relevant traction. You need to start gathering support a long time before you actually launch, the upvotes you get need to come from accounts with age and not brand new accounts, etc.

At least two answers in this thread are generated by chatgpt **** :(

Product Hunt is useless in 2023 depends on your definition of "useless" and your goals for using the platform.

Product Hunt is a website and community where people can discover and discuss new products. It was founded in 2013 and has since become a popular way for startups to get their products in front of potential users.

There are a few reasons why someone might say that Product Hunt is useless in 2023. First, the platform has become increasingly crowded, with hundreds of new products being launched every day. This makes it difficult for new products to stand out.

Second, Product Hunt has been criticized for its lack of diversity. The vast majority of products that are featured on the platform are created by men from Western countries. This can make it difficult for startups from other backgrounds to get noticed.

Finally, Product Hunt has been accused of being pay-to-win. Some people believe that it is possible to buy upvotes and comments on Product Hunt, which can give a product an unfair advantage.

You know what's surprising? Hacker news launches are still valid

    1. 2

Its not even a "launch", I just submitted it as a shot in the dark and it worked out. I will say Hacker News traffic was extremely high quality.

      1. 1

In a similar position where I need to shoot into the dark. Can I ask how you did it? / if you have any tips?

  13. 1

I think, main idea of service calling itself “Product hunt” should be not “Post new projects from founders”. It should be true product HUNT - users post what they need and vote for it. Then founders can post projects as implementation of this idea.

For example, users can create and vote for something like “I really need Twitter2, but with limit up to 30 symbols and i am ready to pay for it $5/month”.

    1. 1

      sounds like a good idea

  14. 1

In the past, Product Hunt was a place where you could gain traffic and even customers by sharing your projects/startups that you built from scratch without any upfront marketing. I never launched a project, but many of my close friends launched their new ventures and got serious traffic.

Nowadays, if you don't look cute to the algorithm, you will never be in the front rankings. You need to take a very serious marketing action from the front. In addition, due to the situations I mentioned, the projects that should really be in the foreground are behind a ridiculous LinkTree knockoff.

  15. 1

I made the noob mistake of launching on PH without any prior engagement and could only get 37 upvotes. A month later, with much more PH engagement and building up some followers, I launched another product and was able to get like 80 upvotes. So, basically it's a game you'll need to learn :)

  16. 1

    I launched today

And I have to say the difference between number 1 and me is like 500% more it's crazy interesting to read what you wrote about it
If anyone wants to help me fight Babylon look up submotion and give it a ding

  17. 1

I also agree with you. Do you guys know a good alternative for early stage startups?

  18. 1

I couldn't agree more. It has always been for "nurturing ego". But, as you've pointed out, lately, it's been overwhelmed by AI, particularly ChatGPT, and template products.

I've noticed products based on ChatGPT taking the top spot during launches, while high-quality enterprise products are largely ignored. I think the audience of Product Hunt has changed a lot.

Furthermore, every day, there are AI-generated discussion posts. And, as you mentioned, my notifications are now filled with irrelevant content.

  19. 1

I've not tried Product Hunt yet, i'm need to get settled in IH first, and get my product established. Thanks for your heads up on Product Hunt.

  20. 1

Interesting to read. I'm planning to launch on PH next week. I have low expectations but at least it should lead to some feedback from a different group of people than I've gotten feedback from until now. Getting a good backlink sounds nice too of course - we'll see!

    1. 2

I agree with what's written here, but it doesn't necessarily mean one shouldn't launch on PH. It's still enjoyable, and receiving support is uplifting. At times, it can generate significant traffic. Even if it doesn't attract the ideal customer profile or prospects who are likely to convert, it can still boost the team's motivation. If you're open to sharing your product for feedback, I'd be happy to provide some :) (My email is [email protected])

      1. 1

💯 Couldn't agree more. Getting more people to look at the product is always good. Sent you an email ;)

      1. 1

This will be my first launch. Ask me again at the end of this week ;)

  21. 1

Any platform that can get good traffic will be populated more product thus reducing traffic and then it will be populated by spammers. All platforms that reach certain level of success with certain level of traffic will invite marketer and sellers.

Its not just producthunt problem it just how supply and demand law work. Its either the launching platform good enough that it will attract spammers or it got not much traffic that it wont attract spammers.

Thats why I believe in more classic direct approach method of promoting and launching product. One good talk give by kathryn minshew title Kathryn Minshew, Acquiring Your First Users Out of Thin Air, The Lean Startup Conference 2013 talk about just launching will not really bring traffic and in that video she highlighted other steps to bring traffic.

I recommend you guys to check the video out.

Also can check this article about getting customers: Acquiring Your First Users Out of Thin Air

  22. 1

Mmm interesting im launching tomorrow I had the feeling I should moderate my hopes,
but what are your opinions on where or how you should promote your product not in a hard sale scammy your face way? to connect with real people who potentially you want to work with?

  23. 1

That's why people shouldn't get their expectations up for Product Hunt - success or failure on the platform is in no way indicative of the future success or failure of your product

  24. 1

As far as I can tell it is no more than a vanity metric at best. If you can get a good initial launch day then sure you will probably have those early users that could be useful but after that, it's dead air.

  25. 1

What a shame. I never understand why people are doing this. After I saw that promotion spam on your campaign, I would never buy their product!

Sorry to hear that your campaign didn't go well, recently I hear it a lot.

    1. 1

They hide it well, and dont make it obvious by just buying a few hundred upvotes. The issue is no one realistically is gonna scroll down past 20th place so buying those upvotes early blends it in as well as gives you the unfair edge to get more traction organically.
