Hi everyone!
We are looking for a product owner for our brick'n'mortar marketing product ( hardware / software ) and that was quite challenging task.
Most of the time we were not able to understand what these people are bringing to the table, and apparently the problem is us - as we are a tech team. Apparently product owners are quite experienced in various aspects like UX design, prototyping, marketing funnels and stuff like that - which we don't quite understand how to assess.
I wonder if someone here can share their experience and perhaps recommend someone or maybe even step in as an advisor? Is there some guide on how people find product owners?
Cheers!
I'd suggest starting with understanding the value of what a fantastic product owner will bring and demonstrating that understanding throughout the hiring process. IMHO, a product owner will be more attracted to a role focused on customer interaction, representing customer value, usage analysis, prioritization, and collaboration with engineering. UX design, prototyping, marketing funnels are great tools but don't speak to the typical responsibilities of the role. As curyous pointed out, those skills can typically be found on your current team if you put value on those activities. If not, cool, i'd recommend taking a look at product owner job reqs from product companies like pendo, figma, etc to see how they are talking to the PO world.
Thanks, especially for that part about the reqs from existing PO/PM positions - somehow that slipped off the table and we never considered that point!
Founders are usually the first PM/PO. You are right to figure out, that as a tech team, you usually keep focussing on solving technical problems missing out on the bigger picture and the product becomes a mess.
I'll suggest one person from your team play the role for now, next best thing is to post on job boards for a full time person. I am still not clear what you guys are working on, let me know and I might be able to guide you better.
Thanks, that is something that we were considering for the time being. At this point we would rather hire a professional who'd help us to build and launch the product, as we have means to support the development etc. The issue is that we don't quite understand what should we ask and how to differentiate one potential candidate from another / make a choice.
interested to partner
Would be happy to partner up on the prototyping and UX & QA. Also, I'm learning Marketing & Funnels too.
How do I message people here? Couldn't find anything :(
Would be happy to partner up on product/growth/marketing tasks
Thanks for reaching out, that would be interesting indeed!
