💡 Product Tips #21: Only White and Black, Ideal Font Size, and On/Off Without Submitting

There were some things in there I agreed with but I'm going to challenge a couple of points. I encourage you to push back if you've got counter points.

Use only white and black

This has nothing to do with UX. Black or white colour schemes look cool I agree! But changing to an all black theme won't improve your UX. This has more to do with branding, marketing, graphic design and potentially UI once those earlier topics have been validated.

You should choose to use an all black theme if it fits the aesthetic of your business and you feel that it will resonate with your target audience.

Ideal font size for content

This feels like asking what is the ideal hammer for building houses. Context is everything. 16px may be a good rule of thumb in many situations but I'd reframe the tip to be: use an appropriate font sizes that allows for legibility and makes sense within the context of the rest of your design. And when it comes to making that decision refer to the NN Group's readability research work and consider its relevance to your use case.

Toggle on/off without submitting

This is a good one! I agree we should remove clicks whenever we can.

Use this with caution however. If toggling a setting could have destructive consequences it probably shouldn't immediately fire off an API call. If multiple settings may need to be changed simultaneously it might be good to allow the user to make multiple changes and submit all at once (eg. permissions). And finally – talk to your engineers. There might be a technical reason why we can't dynamically submit on toggle.

Barring all of those caveats though – this is a good tip :)
