"Productized DevOps as a service" - do you think this can work?

Since small companies/startups often don't have resources to employ a full-time devops person, they seem to do stuff manually which they outsource to Upwork and the like.

A lot of the ops work is now highly automate-able with something like Terraform/CloudFormation. My idea is to offer a menu of devops tasks with a fixed price. The deliverable would include the terraform/CF script along with the actual completed task. Some examples of tasks that come to mind:

  • Set up an automated build process in Gitlab/Github/CircleCI
  • Set up a CI/CD pipeline
  • Set up a DB backup workflow
  • Install an SSL cert

Under the hood, we would need to maintain a bunch of Terraform scripts for different scenarios/use cases. The idea is to be a low-touch business -- the actual execution of scripts can be farmed out to contractors.

What do y'all think?

I have been thinking about the same idea. I would love to discuss this further. I am CEO myself. Let's catch on this. If you are still interested in this idea. My email is [email protected]
