Shipped a major update to my side project today.
Background: I built MOSHELL (browser-based Linux sandbox) in nights/weekends because I couldn't find a good interactive way to learn Linux that didn't require VM setup.
Today's ship: Progressive badge reward system.
Why it matters: The biggest drop-off was lesson 3 (permissions). Depressing stuff when you're learning alone.
Added badges so people could see tangible progress:
- Unlock a badge when you truly complete a lesson (verified, not just marked done)
- Download the badge file to share
- Build toward mastery over 12 lessons
Data since launch (6 hours ago):
- 40% badge unlock rate at lesson 3 (vs. 22% before)
- 80% of badge collectors complete all lessons (vs. 15% before)
Not trying to sell anything. Just shipped something that works and thought others might find it useful.
Lessons 1-6 are free. Try it: kingmo87.github.io/moshell
