      Whoa! I need that 👕

The real question would be-- graphics interchange format or jraphics interchange format?

  2. 4

I love adding jifs to my jithub profile.

Hard-g gif. I will die on this hill. =)

I pronounce it jif because I'm old enough to remember encountering it in the '90s and a lot of folks on BBSes back then made a point to note its pronunciation. The company/person behind it pronounced jif.

When I interact with younger people at work, I pronounce it gif though to avoid a big discussion about it. 😀

Sounds like “JIF” - not “GIF” 😆

    It’s not rocket science 🤨😂

      Haha, fightin’ words 👊 🙃

  5. 3

I'm team JIF, forever and always.

      Agree to disagree 😉

One thing we know for certain through etymology is that language evolves and the origins of words quickly get buried through use. Liguistical epochs only get shorter and shorter in today's world of rapid mass communication. Both pronunciations exist today, and neither is right or wrong. In language every dialect, inflection, tone and accent adds to its rich tapestry we should embrace its many permutations.

Also: do y'all prefer tabs or spaces?

    1. 2

Get outta here! That’s far too controversial 😉

  8. 2

There are two words with gif- in English:

    1. Gift
    2. Giffen

    Both are pronounced as GIF...

    So it's GIF, not JIF

  9. 2

I've always pronounced it with a 'G.' Saying it like JIF reminds me too much of peanut butter. But, tomato tomatõ, eh?

  10. 2

Although the creator(s) of the 'tech' pronounce this with a soft 'g' like 'Jif', and i know I am incorrect when pronouncing it as 'Ghif', I still say 'Ghif' because it's an acronym for 'Graphics Interchange Format' and the 'G' in 'Graphics' is a Hard 'g' as in 'go', therefore the 'g' in the acronym MUST also be a hard 'g', right? RIGHT?!?!? (i am old enough to have spent a LOT of time contemplating the correct pronunciation and rationalizing why i say it the way i do)

I hear ya, think you’d like the video someone just shared on the IH tweet... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N1AL2EMvVy0&ab_channel=TomScott

Surely this needs a IH poll!

      👊 Let’s settle this!!!

It's not up for debate. The original developers named it GIF with a soft 'g'. Anyone pronouncing it otherwise is ignorant: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF#Pronunciation_of_GIF
