QR Product Tracking

I have a few friends who have issues tracking products once sold to wholesalers, like Whole Foods, Urban Outfitters, etc. Apparently, they don't provide data back to the small businesses about which product / brand / flavor was sold.

I was thinking of building a QR code incentive/loyalty program for consumers, so that once the product is purchased (e.g. the QR code is hidden inside the package), and the consumer scans it, they can redeem some kind of reward and the small business owner can gain insights into the product that was sold and who bought it. Basically Cost of Acquiring the Customer via vouchers, coupons, cash back, etc.

Anyone have any insights on this space. I've done some competitor research. Looks like Beaconstac allows you to create QR codes, but doesn't seem to have an incentive mechanism in place. Ibotta is another app.

Any thoughts would be welcome!

Thanks for the input! I think the primary concept is to track post-purchase sales and tie it to a specific consumer by hiding the QR code. The real benefit of this solution is a low-key way to track customers for any merchant that sells to third party wholesalers like whole foods, etc. It's amazing to me that these wholesalers provide 0 data back to the merchant and that information exchange feels really lopsided. I think most merchants that sell to big chains are pretty hungry for this. Each product could have a unique ID and we can use that drive analytics and customer outreach. Seems like a "painkiller" but may need to do some more due dilligence. Would love to connect - did you kill the project?
