Quora answer ranking

Hi guys,

I am interested in using Quora to direct quality traffic to our website. I have done a lot of research to find out the way to choose the right questions to answer.

However, I am unable to understand how my answer will rank well at all. I have read a lot of blogs and quora posts to grasp how Quora ranks answers. I understand that the algorithm parameters are not public, but this is really super confusing.

  1. I don't see upvotes mattering. Too many answers with very few upvotes are way above answers with good number of upvotes. Apparently, this is to ensure that new answers don't suffer from existing ones.

  2. They say quality of the answer. I see pathetic answers ranking above really well-written ones.

  3. It could be based on author reputation. I am not sure whether this is verifiable and if it is, how to establish in a short period of time.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey Steve, thanks so much for sharing this post! Really appreciate it.

My post here on IH doesn't really answer your questions, but gives you some good best practices. Happy to answer your questions though:

        1. I don't see upvotes mattering. Too many answers with very few upvotes are way above answers with good number of upvotes. Apparently, this is to ensure that new answers don't suffer from existing ones.
A: My previous answer to this is incorrect. My answer is only correct based on people's feeds and Quora Digest, not on how well the answer ranks within the question page.

My old answer: That's because Quora ranks answers based on upvote:view ratio. An answer with 10,000 views and 50 upvotes has 1 upvote for every 200 views. But, an answer with just 1,000 views and 25 upvotes has a 1:40 ratio. That's how Quora ranks answers.

        1. They say quality of the answer. I see pathetic answers ranking above really well-written ones.
A: This answer is also wrong, this only matters for getting people to your answer outside of Google.
Old answer: That's because people buy upvotes on Quora. This increases the upvote:view ratio so they'll rank well above the good answers.

        2. It could be based on author reputation. I am not sure whether this is verifiable and if it is, how to establish in a short period of time.
A: And again this wasn't correct. Only matters for getting answer views through Quora's feed and Quora's Digest. Reputation is a factor when it comes to the rank of the answer on the question page.
Old answer: Not really a factor as far as I know. But, having a lot of followers will help you get more upvotes. They can get notified when you publish a new answer plus it's more likely that the answer will be featured in the Quora Digest newsletter.

Most people who write articles about Quora have no idea about how it works.

If for ranking you mean the position that your answer will get inside the question's page, then the main factor is autority.

Whay gives an answer authority? The user's profile, (for example, an history professor answering questions about history will have a priviledged ranking even if his answer is worse than that of an engineer) and the sources (websites that you are linking) are the two main factors.

Then you have other aspects like downvotes (you can't see the number of downvotes, but if they are too many in comparison to the upvotes the answer get collapsed. There is speculatiom about the ratio, most people say that it is between 1:1 and 2:1 upvote to downvote) the user's reputation (there are awards for contribution in every category), number of followers, time since the sign up and so on.

Edit: I am leaving this comment here because it's the original I wrote. But, @Luqa made me change my mind when it comes to answer ranking within Quora and how Google's ranking factors have a huge impact on your answer's rank.

      =======

Hey, as far as I know none of these factors have a high influence on how well the answer ranks:

      • Authority
      • Profile
      • Sources
      • Reputation
      • Sign up time
      • Follower count

At least not directly. The single biggest factor I have seen is the upvote:view ratio. That's how Quora ranks the answers.

Now, that's not to say that your insights are wrong. Because the factors you mention do indirectly influence the upvote:view ratio. I just haven't seen any of those factors being a leading one when it comes to how Quora ranks answers.

      1. 1

What you are saying can easily be disproven. There are hundreds of answers that rank in better position than other with higher upvote:view ratio.

Just the first random example I found.

Edit: Once again, leaving the original comment here, but @Luqa's point is correct.

          =======

Edited my last comment -> "Single factor" into "Single biggest factor". As you're right that it's not always the case; my point is that when it comes to ranking answers, the upvote:view seems to have the biggest impact. The factors you mention are influencing how well it ranks, but from my experience, they don't impact it as much as that ratio.

I'm also seeing the # of shares being a huge factor to rank answers more and more today.

          1. 1

            It still isn't my experience.

The main source of traffic for Quora is google, so Quora's algorithm rewards the same things that Google rewards.

On Quora, I answered about topic where I cpuld be considered an expert and added lots of links (10+ from sources like researchgate, pubmed, scientificamerican and so on). My answers were always in the top and I got 700k+ views in three months with a total of 27 answers.

I also wrote about more personal topics and had insane upvote/view ratio without sources. One answer had 200k views and 25k upvotes. By far the most viewed and upvoted, it was shared by "huge names" (Sean Kernan, Habib Fanny, John Kate). It never made it in the top because ai had zero authority. Another one had 8k upvotes and 100k views but the same happened.

So I would say that when there are no authoritative answers, yes, yhe upvote/view ratio is hugely important. But when there are, it isn't.

Upvote/view ratio is THE factor for your answer being shared in other users feed, that's for sure.

I looked at what you said, scrolled around Quora, and it looks like you're right.

Your argument for ranking the answer based on Google's requirements also makes a lot of sense.

Thank you for the insight, turns out I had been commenting wrong information. I will edit my other 2 comments in this thread.

It also led me to think about the following questions:

              1. Do you think that, since Quora ranks it based on SEO specifications, you can 'game' your answers' rank based on things like keyword density?
              2. Do you think Quora actively tests ranking the answers to figure out what scores best in Google to increase their search traffic?
              3. Would authority be a big factor simply because it's based on the number of backlinks for Google - meaning that a lot of internal links from Quora ultimately lead to Google ranking that answer higher.
              4. How does Quora pull their meta description? Looks like the desc is often different from the first answer. And it'd make sense to heavily test this based on CTR from Google
              5. Would answer length have any impact on the rank, seeing as that's also something Google takes into account when ranking their results?
              6. Do you think Quora also looks at the 'read more' ratio when it comes to Google traffic? As in: let's say 30% clicks 'read more' on the first answer, but 60% clicks 'read more' on the second answer. Do you think that has any impact on the answer's rank within Quora?

Thanks a lot @Luqa - this makes sense. When you suggest that Is should add sources, the problem is that most of my answers are based on my experience in the industry or my opinions. Do you think such answers would not get the needed traction before I establish any reputation on the platform?

What is the optimal way to attribute sources? Maybe, I can find a way to add sources to the facts backing my opinions.

      1. 1

You can add links as further readings for example. They should be relevant to the topic.

There are no best practices. I used to add a list of sources at the end of the answer, connecting my points to a specif source, like scientific papers do.

In your case, a simple list should be enough.

Honestly, yoy would get more traction focusing on the engagement side of the algorithm. The reason is quite simple: the vast majority of Quorans consume content in their feed passively. They follow topics and users and read what Quora suggests.

The best way to have a viral answer is to get a good number of upvotes in a short amount of time after its publication, so you should share the answer with people you know that are on Quora.

The numbers of upvotes needed vary based on the competitiveness of the topic.

Another aspect to consider is that most people on Quora are Americans, followed by Indians, so you shoukd try to publish your answer when those demographics are active on the website.

Very useful @Luqa. Thanks a lot. I will start to incorporate this feedback!

Try writing about other things too. You have written 5-6 answers only about Flexiple, it's a bit repetitive and quora identify that, plus the questions that you have targeted already had some answers with very low engagement and are very old, some of the other answers were from 2015 or 2016.
Try targeting questions where people are already engaging with the answers.
Let me know if you need any help.

Ahh, this is an interesting perspective. Sure, I will try implementing this. I will email you with further context - would love to hear your thoughts.

There is a bunch of metrics, but one that is most important is engagement. So, if your answer is engaged or causes engagement (more active or authority user engages the better), then you will get better ranking. You can see often how many people saw the answer, so you can try to calculate engagements/views. Like any website, there are hundreds of metrics, but upvotes/comments/non-exit answers do matter the most. Similar to early Google ranking algo.

Thanks @BartBoch! I have read about this elsewhere too. Let me take a deeper look into this :)

    2. 1

Not true in my experience. Engagement will affect your answers being shared (or not) by the algorithm and in the newsletter but not the ranking inside the questions' page.
