Ran a directory site? What monetization strategy did you use?

In process of building one myself, and trying to learn from others in the space.
I am not sure what type of directory you are building but a friend of mine is selling access to his B2B oriented directory and is making a nice profit.
If you constantly update your data then maybe a subscription model would work, if not charge per hundred entries downloaded?
Oh nice! That’s a super interesting model. The b2b nature of that probably works well for stable profit.
Not sure in my case that will work but it does give me some ideas. I was thinking of doing more an open directory of developers focused on startups. Where the agencies and shops pay to be listed or featured.
I’d love to check out more what your friend is working on. Do you have a link to his site?
Maybe some banner advertising or affiliate marketing related to the niche?
Yeah I could see advertising working on these sites fairly easily. But ideally would like to learn about other ways it was monetized.
