So, I ranked #1 for a keyword. Nice... but where was the revenue?
If you’re tracking SEO purely by impressions or clicks, you might be missing the point.
Early on, I made this exact mistake: chasing search volume instead of intent. That traffic didn’t convert. It just made the dashboard look nice.
Let’s break down how I flipped my SEO approach — and how using my own tool, SERPtag, helped me start tracking what actually mattered.
I had blog posts pulling clicks. Thousands of them. But conversions? Crickets.
That’s when I realized I was writing for volume, not value.
Here’s what I learned and changed:
Commercial intent > Search volume
I stopped chasing 10k+ volume keywords and focused on ones like best SEO tracker for small business.
Conversions > Clicks
A post that brings 50 clicks and 5 trials is more valuable than one with 500 passive readers.
Context > Competition
Instead of blindly targeting low-difficulty keywords, I looked at why people were searching them.
Revenue > Rankings
I tracked which keywords actually led to signups, not just SERP positions.
To make this pivot work, I used my own tool, SERPtag, to track performance differently.
Here’s how:
Tagged keywords by intent
I labeled keywords as informational, commercial, or transactional.
Tracked changes over time
I monitored how new posts were ranking and if better positions actually meant more conversions.
Used notes to tie keywords to goals
I annotated rankings when a post started converting so I could double down on similar content.
Once I focused on intent-driven SEO, things changed:
If you're building SEO into your growth plan:
Don’t just ask “How can I rank?”
Ask “What happens when I do?”
Start with real searcher intent.
Track what moves the needle.
Focus on outcomes, not vanity metrics.
And if you need a tool to help with that I'm building one at SERPtag.
Happy to share more if helpful!
Great insights, Chris. Loved the shift from ranking for volume to ranking for intent. It’s a common trap, and your approach with SERPtag feels like a smart way to align SEO with actual business goals. Subscribed to try it out—thanks for sharing!
