Reaching out to communities of potential customers
There are online communities that I think would be interested in my product (e.g. certain subreddits), but most seem to be against self-promotion/spam.
How do you let these communities know about your product without being dismissed as spam?
Put your own (selfish) needs to one side and give value.
Imagine you walked into a party in a new neighborhood and started trying to sell to people straight away.
Get to know the community. Participate in discussions. Understand the things they like. Then share some stories that you think will resonate.
But it takes so much time, you say. Yes it does.
But the other way (most likely) won't get you any results, so you may as well try to do it properly 🤷🏽♀️

I’m in a similar position and I’ve also spent a bit of time directly chatting with individuals in the community, which can be a good way to get advice more immediately. I’m asking them for advice, not selling them anything, which I’ve found works well (and is also how I’d prefer to be approached, much more friendly and useful!)
Yeah, that makes sense. Plus I can see why these rules are in place because it's easy for the community to turn into an endless stream of ads.
