Really Long List Post - what would you change design wise?

RE: My #1 UX feedback: Fold:

Most people didn't notice that detail, but…

It was very intentional for us to have a visual pattern break above the fold.

In our case, the yellow section separator is visible even on a 13in macbook (about 800px), and the first tile becomes visible if you have a slightly larger laptop.

Your scrolling retention curve will typically be asymptotic.

There's a huge drop off at the beginning.

So anything to lower the bounce rate really helps.

In the case of your layout, I could easily land of the page and think

"Oh, yet another long "medium style" article."

…and quit, missing all the awesomeness you built below. That would happen even if I had a huge screen that had 1,200px visible above the fold.

Some potential solutions:

• Chopping down the empty space in your blue banner (+110px)
• Giving some width to your column for a higher word count per line and
• Reducing the text might help.
• I personally find your illustration is very nice, but it might paradoxically be hurting your retention by pushing your content lower (+330px).
• Extra credit if your content upgrade is above the fold as well. Most of our signups come from there and it's not a coincidence :).
