Received 114 sign ups in my first month of marketing

Hey everyone,

In February, I started marketing and received 114 sign ups. Tbh I didn’t think I was going to see results this fast. I have never really done any type of marketing and my goal for the year was to just start building a presence, talk to users and start finding a couple new clients. My game plan was to join relevant subreddits, read posts, leave comments, and direct message people who had challenges I could help them solve.

A little background:

I’m building a social network that matches people’s careers with their passions. Right now, I am looking to find users that are unhappy with their career and help them transition into a tech career through a bootcamp. These bootcamps pay me when I refer users to them. Users also pay me for coaching.

While messaging and commenting helped me get started, there was one comment I left that really got everything started. You can find that here:

I got upvoted to the top comment and I’m still hanging out there. Give me an upvote if you’re feeling generous; I like to stay on top lol. I check our analytics every day and saw a large spike the day I left it and even more the day after (67 and 139 visiters). Even more surprising was how people signed up. I had a location to sign up, but everyone was signing up through a typeform quiz. I have a career quiz on our site that directs people to careers that best fit them. All the sign ups came through this career quiz. We received 14 sign ups the first day and then 41 the next day

Learning + Results:

PEOPLE LOVE QUIZZES. We ended up moving this to our front page and making it our sign-up process and a lead magnet. We regularly get 1 or 2 sign ups a day now.

I quickly learned that writing comments reached more people and helped others who had similar questions. If you’re the most upvoted comment on a popular post, you get a lot of attention and eyes. If you share helpful insights that people like and leave a link at the bottom, people will check it out.

I now spend about 2 hours/day messaging people and leaving comments. I’m in the process of adjusting my schedule, so that I’m not missing this time.

In February, I messaged 35 people, about 21 of those people responded and now I have 1 active user who pays me for coaching. I wrote 18 comments, 600 people visited my landing page and we received 114 sign ups.

Concerns + Next steps:

Right now, I have a list of sign-ups sitting around and I’m trying to figure out what to do with them. One of my big concerns is that people really like the quiz, but don’t care about transitioning jobs. Next week, I’m going to send out another survey to start qualifying these users and seeing whose a target user or not.

After that, I will be updating our career quiz and sign up process to start qualifying users right away. Then I will be building out an automated marketing system to start qualifying and reaching out to this users automatically.

    Congrats on the success Frankie! Reddit is the perfect place for your idea (and I love the name!).

    What specifically are you planning on asking on the survey?
    And what kind of automated marketing system are you planning on building?

      So we narrowed the questions down to

      1. Why are you taking our quiz?
      2. When are you looking to transition into an new career?

      Right now, we just want to build a system that follows up with our target users if they don’t sign up for a consultation. We need to iterate on this

        Gotcha!

        If I may -
        the first question is a bit too pointed to get the desired result

        • it's very "me" focused
        • it's harsh.

        I'd instead frame it in turn of how you can help them instead of we need information from you for our purposes.
        For example:

        • How can we help you in your career journey? (with a range of answers, including career switches)
        • On a scale of 1-5, how satisfied are you in your current career?
        • Do you feel your job makes you come alive?
        • do you feel a different job could make you come alive?
        • Are you excited to go to work?
        • (followup) if not, what makes you not excited to go to work? (include coworkers, poor management, disorganization, and the work itself - people want to career switch for lots of reasons besides the job itself)

        That second question implies a few things:

        • that they believe they have what it takes to transition to a new career (lots of people lack confidence in themselves about something and big as a job change)
        • that they at some point want to transition to another career

        I'd instead frame it in terms of qualifying if people are searching or curious - you need the searching people as leads, but the curious people are often the best at WOM - they're the mental libraries of the friend groups.
        For example:

        • Are you generally curious about alternative careers?
        • Do you feel your current job suits you as a person?
        • Would you be interested in exploring a new career?

        I'd look at how other companies have done their surveys and lead with empathy. Your goal here is to understand these first users deeply so you can build a company that knows it's customers. Not just make the sale.

        Your brand and story are warm and inviting - at face value those questions feel anything but.

    Thanks for sharing your actions and the thought process!

    I took the test and looked through the website. The test was engaging (with pictures) and the website looks very good. However, I could not actually find, what is the service. I saw applying to the free consultation, but I would like to see a quick map of how do I get to my dream job i.e. test -> free consultation -> PREMIUM: coaching (from what I understand from this blog). I would like to know when do I have to start paying and for what.

    P.S. the test confirmed that I'm in my dream job right now :)

    Cool congrats on your first signups. Did you use paid traffic to drive people to the page with quiz?

      I might be missing your question, but no, we didn’t use any paid traffic. We just marketed on Reddit. Check the section labeled Magic Moment and I break it down what I did.

    Hey,
    I had the same idea originally, to reach out to people with ADHD with the service I just launched by sharing my own experiences and winning strategies and how my service builds on top of that to solve further ADHD issues. But so far got shut down for "self-promotion". It was in the discord that is connected to ADHD reddit. Can you summarise how you determine where it is appropriate and where not to post links to your own site where it is the solution to the problem stated? Or is Reddit in general more tolerant and open than Discord servers so the worst I would get is downvoting if my comments seem inappropriate. I am a bit paralysed now since the experience, it made me feel like I am clueless, so any advice would help since it was going to be my strategy also.

      Hello,

      I haven’t made any posts yet on these subreddits; I only comment and direct message. For my comments, I make sure to answer the question or post directly first. Then if it’s appropriate, I share my link at the end of my comment expressing how I can help people with my business. Check the link I shared, or check my comment history for examples.

      I haven’t used discord yet, so I’m not sure how they handle it. I feel like as long as you’re answering the post then you’re fine.

      Also, I have ADHD, would love to help if you are looking to do a user interview.
