Last night I was comparing some of the three really amazing places on the internet to discuss about startup and side projects. In my comparison I have includes reddit community r/startup some facebook startup groups and indiehacker(this website) and producthunt. The conclusion I draw from the comparison is that these website provides almost similar services, yet these places are very successful in their places. In the world of business it is always said that you have to be different from your competitor to win the customers or in this case users. Do you have any idea why all these platform are so successful despite of serving the same userbase, also I have seen people who are using producthunt also post articles on indiehackers or reddits.
All four cater to heavy internet users (and addicts) who are just the type who spend multiple hours a day keeping up with various endless streams of content.
My theory: a market (group of users interested by something) can be divided in segments. Some people more like this, between this age, in this financial situation will go more on Reddit for example.
Segmentation is really important to understand because even if you think the same group of users go to the same platform, it's not really exactly the same group. Yes, they are all interested in creating a startup, but their backgrounds and values are different and can push them to use one platform instead of the other.
Of course there is some overlaps (some people goes everywhere) but it's not the case for everybody.
How do you determine your segments? Well, you need data about your users: who are they, what are they doing, and so on.
