I'm still working on improving in this area too. The sources I've come across that seem helpful;
Nir Eyal's book - Hooked
He also has plenty of interviews and talks available.
General things like customer engagement, find them, kidnap them and have questions ready to pick their brain.
Watch them in silence try to use your app.
