Redesigned my website, WYT?

I just finished version 1 of my ambiance platform (https://soundportals.live).

Let me know what you think about the design, and if you have any ideas on how to improve it.

I feel like it needs an explanation somewhere. What is this? Who's it for? How and when am I supposed to use it? Even in the "Explore" section… what are these options, where did they come from, and will they still be here tomorrow if I come back? What's a subscription?

EDIT: I'm enjoying the music, though! 😝

I also don't like that the music stopped playing when I clicked "subscriptions". It'd be nice if the music never stopped no matter where I navigate on your site.

The static UI is big… the top bar, the left sidebar, and the bar at the bottom showing what's playing now all feel huge, and they're crowding out my ability to see the main UI.

Finally, since the tracks all have a limited playtime, it'd be nice to see that on the links themselves, at the very least on hover. It'd also be nice to be able to create a playlist, otherwise I'll forget to play another track when the current one ends.

Thanks csallen! Hashtags/categories and playlists coming soon. When you clicked subscriptions were you logged in?

I also agree with the playtime thing, will add that now. From what I hear it sound like I need to communicate the idea somewhere. Have some ideas will try.

    Hey! 👋
Good start, just a few things:

    1. As already mentioned — make all the navigation elements smaller.
    2. I think that with your type of content you need to give it as much space as possible — make content the king.
    3. The sidebar on the left takes a lot of space, but only has 2-3 elements. Maybe play around with moving it elsewhere (i.e. into the top nav).
    4. It would also be good to have some sort of explanation of what the site is about. It doesn't have to be a block of text, a clear headline would suffice.

    All the best. 🤝

      Ok thanks for the advice!

I have no idea what this is for, it has some nice sounds but what am I meant to do beyond that? Is it just hop on and listen to them? I see an upload button but what am I meant to upload? Think about a brand new user, no background knowledge.

You click subscriptions and it asks you to sign up but what am I signing up for?

The search bar is broken, If I put in "Cyber" no results found but I know there is one result there that matches.

Why is everything grid based with images? If the intention is to find sounds you like, if you add 100 sounds, can you categorise them more? Would a list display similar to SoundCloud help with that?

You don't have a privacy policy anywhere on the site except for on login pages, same with terms of service, they must be in the footer and visible for users.

Hey Breffni, thanks for the advice, this is really informative!

It looks pretty good but I do think some of the buttons particularly in the nav bar are too big. Also the images load slowly. Since on the website they're displayed so small there's no need for each image to be that big. You can resize them and also upload them to an image optimiser to decrease the file size.

Thanks so much for the advice kjcharles! I'll go ahead and optimize the images now.

It’s pretty jacked up on mobile: screen is split vertically, unreadable and unusuable. Something bad wrong is going on with the site!

    1. 1

I have not done any work on mobile yet, let me know if this is happening anywhere besides that.

Looks good on both desktop and iPadOS. Checked it with Safari and Firefox. Smooth!

Looks amazing, a couple of small things

    • message in console says you are using dev version of firebase? it might speed up your app if you change it to prod?
    • You have some massive images on that page can you look at cloud functions to serve a smaller size here (I don't want you to get unexpected charges if it takes off)
    1. 1

Thanks, tom, I'll look into the firebase thing. I have implemented a cloud function for the images, the issue is: how to change the image sizes already in storage. If you have any idea I would love to hear it.

Nice work! I love the sounds!

    A couple of comments:

    1. I already listen to these kinds of audios on Spotify, so I was familiar. I'm not sure if the landing page will be clear enough to someone unfamiliar. Probably need to include some intro.
    2. Question that the LP does not answer: how does your product compete with similar playlists on music streaming apps e.g. Spotify? (I'm guessing your playlists will be better curated?)
    1. 2

They are not curated by me, they are created by random people, whoever wants to grow a followship in the space and is good at making the audios can post, gain subscribers and attention.

Its like Soundcloud but for ambiance sounds/music.

      1. 1

        I see. Very interesting!

Performance needs some improvement. Home page loads over 60 MB of data. If I'm on 3G it's probably going to take more than a minute to load the home page at 8 mbps (typical speed for DC-HSPA+), and two minutes at 4 mbps (typical speed for HSPA+).

Nowadays it's usually better to design for mobile first, then for desktop.

Cool stuff! Can help me def to snooze slowly into sleep. However, when I open up the site on my phone, I noticed directly that it was not mobile proof. For this site it will be at least 60% mobile users. So keep an eye ok that. Also make sure you add some intro abt the tool instead of jumping directly on the soundportal. Keep it up ✌️.
