Redeveloped my whole site. What would you change?

I've spend quite a bit of time redesigning my site. I would appreciate any feedback, both positive and negative.

Thanks!

Looks pretty cool, just too much going on for me.

Thanks for taking a look zoftbase. Was there anything specifically that made it too busy? I was trying to make it obvious that all sites were bespoke and not just using a template - as this is part of my unique selling point.

The video is very fast, everything else seems smooth though. Scrolling down feels natural. The static background for the articles might be much, but overall by looking at the site I would get the interpretation that you are good at what you do.

        1. 1

I used lots of overlapping elements to try and lead the user down the page, so I appreciate the comment :)
I think I'll have to remove the video judging by everyone's comments. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for sharing mctweb! Enjoyed taking a look at your website and thought I'd drop some feedback here. First impression is the design feels very professional with a unified design throughout, however the motion graphics in the open move a bit quickly to read all the copy, and the "scoll" button on the far right wasn't immediately obvious.

Diving into the services page, I'd suggest cutting the copy by 50% and reframing from "My/I" to "you" value-driven statements. For example, under Plan it reads: "I will get to know you, your needs and gain an understanding of your users. I will use this time to gather most of the information required to plan the project and create wireframe sketches so that the vision can be shared. I believe this is an essential first step to ensure that the end product will meet the requirements."

Maybe try "Turning your vision into reality starts with a plan. As a first step, we'll get aligned on your needs and we'll create a blueprint together - from understanding your users to wireframe sketches - and get aligned on the end product at the start."

Hope this is helpful feedback and thanks again for sharing! :)

Thank you for reviewing mikaro and giving me some pointers. I'm working on the changes proposed and have 'beefed' up the scroll prompt and reduced and improved the content. I appreciate that you wrote out what you would write, that is really helpful for me and has given me a lot to think about.

      1. 1

You're welcome mctweb - glad to hear this was helpful!

To add a comment roughly in line with everyone else: I think that the video is impressive but it's overwhelming at first. Unless you are solely developing video/animation-style websites (which it doesn't look like you are?) I might save it but not make it autoplay.

It depends on who your target is though. I don't think I'm your target.

    1. 1

Thanks Scott! I'll maybe contact my friend and ask them to slow the video down a bit, this seems to be the main issue with it.

  4. 2

Ugh, that is really nice Fraser.

Without much words, the intro animation screams "I can do really cool shit for your website."

    1. 1

Haha thanks! Maybe that should be my headline? XD

  5. 2

From my limited design knowledge I really like the overall theme of the website.

With that I would look into some copy changes. When I first landed on your site and read the first heading I didn’t know what the page was about. I had to scroll down and read about the different services you provide. I would do everything you can to provide upfront what you can do for your customers. Having to hunt for something like that will really hurt your conversions.

One of the areas I would first start with copy changes would be the first two headings and the following paragraph.

When writing these sections you’ll want to show you understand there pains, fears, doubts, etc. After this you want to guide them by showing you can solve those pains, fears, doubts!

Something to go along with this is to keep the conversation about your customers. Yes it’s nice to highlight your experience and knowledge, but ideally you want it to be about your customer and how you can solve there problem(s).

Also to clarify I don’t think you do what I mentioned above, it’s just something I wanted to include for reference. :)

If you want specific info on something let me know!

    1. 2

Thanks Risk! Your bit about understanding their fears, doubts etc is a great point and something I will try to align my content with. These are all things that I know, however it is easy to forget! I'll need to analyse some keywords and see what to call the packages, this is probably what I'll need to do to get the titles correct on the services.

Really nice polished landing page. I really like the colors you went with as well.

I did find the video very visually pleasing, but in terms of information I think it confused me a bit:

    • Wasn't super clear to me what your specialties were and what area of focus I should expect to work with you on.
    • My first thought was that you were showing off the type of work (animation/video editing) that you specialized in.
    • A lot of information was present but only appeared for what felt like a split second so none of it sunk in (could be me as I am just now drinking my first coffee of the morning :D)

Overall, really impressed with the polish of your site!

    1. 1

Thanks jkchu! There have been quite a few comments on the video, so I think this will have to get changed, even if I really like it. I can see how at first glance it isn't obvious what I can provide so will work on this.

  7. 2

Hey Fraser, site design is good but I think you should focus more on your copy to help people understand what you can help with.

The header animation is novel but after watching it I'm still not sure what you can help with and why I should work with you. What type of companies do you work with? What outcomes do you help them achieve?

A super simple header that says something like "I help {business type} {outcome} with {your services}. E.g. I help event organizers increase audience engagement and build loyalty with custom websites. Not a copy expert, but based on my experience, specific and benefits-driven copy is better than purely descriptive copy.

    1. 1

Content is king. Writing copy is something that I am working on to improve. Your comments have especially helped me with the direction of content, so thanks very much for the specifics.

  8. 2

I was trying to click on the animation for sure.

I would personally changed the 99/100 lighthouse score. My OCD would be killing me. JOKES. It's a greats score dude.

Perhaps add some examples of work on the home page? Or make the brands you've worked with more prominent.

    1. 2

Haha, thanks for reminding me of the 99. It keeps me up at night already :P
Thanks for your feedback. I think I will change the header with an example of a site including more direct copy as well. Thanks!

@mctweb great website, it looks beautiful, and the video at the top was a lot of fun.

One comment to add: I wasn’t sure what your website was for until I scrolled down and got more context - (oh you’re a web developer!).

One suggestion for the tagline (out of many I’m sure you’ve already considered): “Got a big idea? Let’s build a website together.”

    1. 1

Thanks youngchingjui. It's always nice to get some positive comments!
That's a good idea for the tagline, many is an understatement haha. I'll get this done as well as the other suggestions.

  10. 2

I found it a bit confusing initially, I was waiting for the animation to stop so I could see the rest of the page, once it got back to the start I thought to scroll and it became clear that the animation was just the top banner.

Once I was past the above the site is nice in appearance and responsive. So pretty nice.

I would echo some of the below comments, I'm not sure what the packages you offer are, but as long as your clients do then that's all that matters.

    1. 2

Thank you David. I can see where the confusion would arise. I do have a bit that says scroll, but perhaps it should be larger or more visible. I have noticed users say that they find this with full page images / videos - I personally always scroll but I'm not designing the site for myself at the end of the day!
I'm going to work on the package offers soon and make this more user friendly and less fluff.

  11. 2

    I love this 👍

    1. 1

      Thank you :)

  12. 2

Looks great! However, a couple of suggestions

Testimonials aren't standing out - adding heads to names could help - brains work in a way to just scan - so while doing that - it looked like a large text area without a heading or separator. Do not expect the viewer to figure out stuff.

I am not sure of the titles given for services, never actually asked anyone to build websites with that titles (Acclerator website, Brochure website) - Talk in terms of customer/client - those could be your classification of websites you build, but what would a customer search for.

Make sure you build website to be discovered (inbound leads), rather than just as a portfolio website that could be passed on. First way gets you gigs that keeps you busy all life and never have to look for work.

    1. 2

Thanks adohodl for taking the time to look over my site. I have read about including headshots for testimonials, so you have confirmed this for me. I'll talk to the clients and get them added!
I was unsure about the titles, I do need to spend more time analysing keywords that are used, so will do this and review.
I'm working on my content and articles to help with inbound marketing, however I'm quite new so I know this will take time to build up. I'm totally sold on direct marketing and aim to focus on this going forward.

      1. 1

Try using some opensource avatars like Pablo Stanley's for headshots if getting permission is a long walk.

  13. 2

Hi mctweb, What did you use for the animations. It looks like an action movie. Well done.

    1. 2

Hi ryanh1. My friend Gavin at (walnut wasp)[https://www.walnutwasp.com/] made this for me using After Effects. He's an absolute wizard, I have no idea how he does it. He made it whilst learning the software, so I was shocked at the quality when he showed it to me!

      1. 2

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. You can tell him that I like it a lot.

  14. 2

Hey @mctweb, I'd love to take a look at your landing page but I can't find the link. Where can I find the link to your landing page?

    1. 1

Thanks johncb, really sorry about that. I've added it to the original post. I appreciate you messaging!

Awesome, your page is super interesting.

        • I love the color palette
        • I'm confused by the different package options. I'm not your target customer but I imagine that your customers may have trouble understanding which package is best for them. For example, I'm not sure what the difference is between your brochure package and your accelerator package. The innovation package is clear to me because you list specific examples of work to be done at that level.

My approach fuses strategy, design, and cutting-edge technology to deliver the finest websites and applications again and again.

I don't like this statement because I don't think it adds value. I think it's too generic, I would bet that most web devs would describe their work with a similar statement. It doesn't help differentiate you imo. Maybe you can write more about yourself, the person.

        • I'm not your target customer but I have to imagine that your customers are interested in who you are as a person if they're going to be working closely with you. Maybe you can add a bio about yourself.
        • Ah jk! I found your "about" page after poking around a bit. Maybe you can include a small section about yourself on the landing page.
        1. 1

Thanks John for your thorough reply. I agree with all of your points, especially regarding the packages. I'll work on the text and possibly add in pages describing the packages in more detail. I feel a bit at limbo whether to try and put in more personality in the content, or try to keep things professional - I think this probably comes across as being generic.
I don't like writing about myself ( I think others may feel the same! ) but will make the push to add a bit about me on the landing page.
Again, thank you very much for taking the time. If you need anything please get in touch!

          1. 2

Glad I could help :) I wanna add one more comment:

            • Your landing animation was too fast for me to keep up with. In particular there's a piece of text that flies in from the right, and it's rotated in a way that was difficult for me to read. I spent a moment trying to read it and then ended up missing the next piece of text that appeared bc I was trying to catch the first one. Anyways, I would reconsider the animation. I think the animation adds value if youre targeting customers who are seeking that kind of sleek, fast, animation work. But if your typical customer or your desired customer is not served by those animations then perhaps reconsider it. There's an amazing book named "Dont make users think" and I think that some of those principles could be valuable here: https://smile.amazon.com/Dont-Make-Me-Think-Usability/dp/0321344758?sa-no-redirect=1

            • I like that you highlight "why not wordpress". Are there other specific pain points your customers are facing? I would use those problems and solutions to replace the generic text that I mentioned in my previous comment.

            (jk, two comments.)

            1. 1

I've added the book to my basket and will be reading it in a few days! A good friend made the animation for me recently and I am really greatful for that. I totally see it from your point of view however, so I will try an A/B test to see.
I'm new to this community so didn't expect such a well thought out response, I will definitely will stick around!

Cool but bad user experience when I land on it since all I see is animated slides moving too fast and I have no idea what is going on (brutally honest). Then I scroll down and realize that you provide Website Building service and you are trying to sell using the fact that WordPress is not a good choice.

With all those animations etc, the site loaded super fast though for me in the US so good work there.

I would remove the animated slides and just have a simple section with a tagline or clear message that tells me what you do before I do any scrolling. Also, your messaging is not very clear about what exactly you provide other than the fact that WordPress is not a good choice. Focus on benefits and not features. Hope this helps.

    1. 1

Thanks for your comment. I think I will start working on some text. I appreciate your comments on the messaging, this is something I need to work on, so I will get on with it!

Thanks for letting me know. Which mobile are you using? Which browser? What do you mean by broken? I have tested on a few different devices - iphone and android, and haven't had any issues.
I'd really appreciate any information you can give me as that is very concerning to me.

Ah right, I see what you are referencing. Yes, rather than cut out text I decided to put the video smaller. I agree that it isn't the best on mobile and could put people off. Thanks for clarifying for me - in response to other comments it looks like the video will be going - so I this will be fixed.
