Referral Rewards for Newsletter?

Hi everyone! 👋

Morning Brew's CEO sent out an email this morning announcing a new referral program for the newsletter (screenshot as the header image).

Has anyone done any referral or incentive programs like this to build out their newsletter list? I'm not exactly sure how you would track referrals, but I like the concept.

I am currently looking for the right tool to roll out a referral program for my Scrappy MarTech newsletter. I cannot find one that meets all of my needs just yet. After the basics of handling tracking and managing the custom rewards program & referral links, the requirements are:

    • Be able to use my own landing page for subscribers
    • Integration with AWeber so I can include the unique referral link in the email, with messaging on "you have referred y friends. you are x away from the next reward"
    • Not require signing up separately for a rewards program. Too much friction.
    • Zapier integration (I hate closed systems)
    • Leaderboard and gamification

Here is what I have looked at so far:

sparkloop - Has everything I want except doesn't integrate with AWeber. They are targeting end of Jan/Feb for this.

viral-loops - Currently you have to use their subscriber form, They are targeting sometime in Jan to allow you to use your own form.

referral hero - Requires signing up for the referral program in addition to subscribing to your newsletter.

@yaroslawbagriy The Newsletter Crew has one coming out in mid/end January called ReferralKit.

Anyone have any other referral tools to recommend?

Yeah we'll have AWeber for our initial launch! Looking forward to it :)

Have you looked into Branch.io? They might be a good solution for what your looking for.

Well, the easiest thing to do is creating special referral email address and ask people to share it :) In this case you won't be sure if people exactly subscribed but you can track email forwards and with hashtags, twitter shares etc.

If you want to do something more sophisticated you can try to utilize the tool called Gleam. :)

I am using EmailOctopus for my newsletter and it doesn't have any easy integration solution like Mailchimp and others. Also I'm a cheapskate and don't like to pay for things if all I need is simple features (just referral counter)

So I just ended up rolling with my own solution that I hacked together in couple hours (built on AWS Lambda).

Would love to read about this and know how you developed it, if you have time 🤟

I’m also on the cheaper side now and use the free tier of MailChimp since I have under the paid limit of subscribers (which is part of my problem, I want to grow it).

Your AWS Lambda setup might actually be a really interesting post/walkthrough for other to see.

GrowSurf looks super interesting to me in that it's specifically designed for email newsletters (caveat that I haven't tried the product & don't know the people who run it) . We definitely want to use a referral tool for our newsletter FitGirlsSociety.com when we get above 500 subscribers, which is the minimum subscriber level Growsurf recommends before starting a referral program. We'd like to do rewards you don't have to physically mail out—say, a useful checklist or template, or maybe something interactive like a live Q&A via Zoom.

Let me add 1 more. Firewards does is a useful tool with lots oof integration. 14 free trials and eaWiLbJp code makes 15% discount. ;) https://www.firewards.com/?src=frtdemirel
