Injury time in an All-Ireland semi-final, a point in it, and the picture froze. By the time it came back the lads in the pub down the road were already celebrating. That was the day I stopped caring about channel counts and started caring about one thing: does the stream hold when the whole country is watching. I spent 13 months testing IPTV service options against exactly that.

Almost every stall gets blamed on the broadband, and most of the time that is wrong.
Video copes badly with unevenness, not with slowness. A line showing a healthy average that drops out for half a second every minute produces exactly the freezing people blame on the provider. The opposite is true as well: a modest but steady connection — even a rural one still waiting on the fibre — streams beautifully.
The five-minute diagnosis: while the stream is stuck, open something else on another device. If it loads instantly, your line is fine and the problem is upstream. Then look at the clock. A connection does not degrade at the throw-in of an All-Ireland final. An oversold shared server does.
One thing: how many servers they run, and whether you can switch between them yourself inside the app.
A provider with several will move you off a congested route at peak time. A provider with one will politely explain that the problem is at your end. Ask before paying: how many servers, where are they, and can I change mine. Hesitation on any of the three is your answer.
Everything else — channel counts, 4K badges, lifetime deals — is noise next to that.
Stalls at peak time: effectively none on the service I kept, across months of Championship Sundays, Six Nations weekends and European nights.
What made the difference: multiple servers and being able to switch between them myself. Nothing else came close — not even the fibre finally reaching our road.
What made no difference: the channel count, the 4K badge on the sales page, and the headline price.
What I would do again: run the twenty-minute peak-time test before paying. What I would not: judge anything on a quiet weekday.
After 13 months of peak-time testing, the IPTV service I still pay for is Northpeaktv. There is a free trial running now, no card required — run the twenty-minute match-day test on it before you decide. Channels, pricing and setup guides are at https://northpeaktv.com.
