Remember that small, consistent progress over time adds up

I was getting a little discouraged about my side project last month. I was busy with other things so I wasn't shipping new features, and I have basically put my marketing on autopilot. I couldn't cancel a couple services I signed up for and didn't really need (because the 12-month commitment seemed like such a great deal!) so my project was even further from profitable than I hoped.

I sat back and took a little time off from it - doing just the minimum to keep it running. Leads continued trickling in, and it got a few random shares from others on Twitter. I looked at my stats for October and I realized I've now doubled revenue from 3 months ago. It's still not a lot of money, but it's measurable progress!

My point is that with side projects, you're probably not sitting on a rocket ship - those stories get lots of attention, but believe me, they're rare - but you can make progress over time if you're consistently doing just a little every month. Having just a few paying users is super motivating because you have people you can talk to about what to build next, you have marketing channels that might bring in even more people, and you are not alone anymore.

Keep working at it, my friends 👍

Thanks for the post @karlhughes . I've been having a low time recently and the big list of to do list made progress very slow. I really needed a break, this weekend a friend of mine bought some old furniture for his Airbnb house. I spent the weekend painting the furniture, it was a real stress buster and so refreshing.

If I may give you an advice Karl, it is to keep a "diary" (it can be just a piece of paper) where every week you write only the most significantly metrics for your project and put it where you can see it.

Often you need to rember where all started.

    Good luck, Karl!

Love it. That's actually what I've been doing on Indie Hackers - every month I write a reflection post with my KPIs in it. It's been nice to have those to look back on and see progress.

      Good luck to you too!

Yes I completely agree with this. I like to make sure I spend at least 20 minutes a day doing something to increase my skill sets. It's crazy what you can do with just small incremental tasks every day.
