I'm doing some research on a possible app idea, and would love to get some feedback on whether this is a problem that needs solving...
When I was working remotely as a dev, I found one of the hardest problems was communicating what I was working on with my team.
My parents always taught me to be modest when speaking about myself, and to let my results speak for itself. However, I found that in a team environment, proactive communication works much better.
How do you share your day to day with your team? What tools, methods, or habits do you use to solve this problem?
When I used to work with remote software developers I used to use a combination of:
Trello
Google Docs
Slack
Trello - for small task + description. Usually linking to Google Docs with more details
Google Docs - detailed overview
Slack for other communication + chit chat
A timesheet used to be filled in in a Google Sheet.
I am a developer myself so communication was smooth as I could understand the pain points of developers!
Skype for daily sync/standup calls
Telegram for the group chat
Weekly company-wide reports on key metrics, successes and failures
Make an offline meet, having some booze.
I try to stay out of the way of my team as much as possible. I do a short daily call with the team members that are relevant at the time.
I've been working remotely for 2 years now and the best advice I can give from my own experience is over communicate. Do your best to express yourself over chat and give more info than needed.
"Hey Bob, I just finished feature A and I'm starting on the new upload picture button. It will take me x amount of time to have it working and have it styled like the mockup design. But I'm not sure how I feel about this pink button color, any thoughts?" – Example
Probably a bad example ☝
People will be able to see my work when I push my work to the repo and any staging site.
If anyone is curious, I've cross-posted on HN and Reddit here:
