Repeda: Spaced learning app with study cards

Hi everyone,

We've recently released Repeda. I would appreciate any feedback. I think I mainly want to make sure that what the app does is communicated clearly. Any other feedback regarding the home page and the sign up page would also be very helpful.

Cheers

Congrats on your launch. I'm not your ideal commenter as I have used flashcard apps a lot and therefore am not coming in fresh, but here are my thoughts:

    • Not clear why I would use this over Anki which is free

    • In general, the copywriting needs an upgrade. The copy is clear but generic/uninteresting, especially the H1 ("Learn smarter, faster")

    • There's too much verbiage about features/functions/process, and not enough about the customer's desired future state(s). As is often said, "People don't want a quarter-inch drill bit, they want a quarter-inch hole."

    • I think you're way under-selling the spaced repetition algorithm, which is a huge discovery for many new flashcard app users. Check out memrise.com for a better framing: "Proven memory techniques rooted in science: Learn more, faster, with a learning algorithm developed with the best cognitive science."

    • I like the bird logo but not the name. Who wants to do something "repeda"-tive? It's like the name is saying the app is boring. Again, focus on the customer's desired future state, not the process.

    • Having said all that, the site and the app screenshots look nice and elegant to my untrained eye. You might try to mix in some lighter shades of the bird-beak yellow here and there.

Overall, my analogy would be that the house appears soundly built but needs remodeling. I hope this was helpful, and good luck.

Thanks for taking the time and write a detailed review, I really appreciate it.

We don't see Repeda as a direct Anki competitor. Repeda is not a flash card app. That's why we haven't mentioned it anywhere on the website. Anki is great and has very advanced features but it's not for everyone. Its user base is relatively technical. We wanted to create something that's easy to use and at the same time is powerful enough to support their learning. For the same reason Repeda may not be ideal for every Anki user out there.

In Repeda you can create small study cards just like you would normally do on a small piece of paper and if you choose to you can turn them into a quiz card with a click, rather than flash card approach where you write an a question on one side and answer on the other.

Depending on the uptake we're also planning to offer a companion mobile app and a browser extension.

By the way have you noticed that the quiz cards on the top right are interactive?

I agree with the copy. It's been mentioned in another post here as well. I'll work on it and see what I can do to improve it.

I'm glad you liked the logo. I just double-checked the yellow of the bird beak and it's actually the same colour as the rest of the site. I think it just looks lighter on black.

Even though I don't see the name Repeda as negatively (I'm probably biased or just get used to it), I can see where you're coming from. It's based on the idea that it is spaced repetition learning, therefore repetition is key. We had a few options and asked around a bit to decide which one to go with, and went with the majority's decision.

It's great to hear that you liked the overall design.

Thank you for your feedback, it was useful.

I take your point about Anki being more complicated.

And I see the distinction you're drawing in terms of repeta not being a "flashcard app" strictly speaking. However, I'm not sure that's a distinction which will be legible and have discernable value to your potential users -- I didn't notice it myself until you specifically pointed it out in your reply.

So a significant issue to my mind is how to convey (even if only implicitly) repeda's difference versus simple flashcard apps like Quizlet -- which also offers SRS -- as well as the distinctive value associated with that difference. (And I'm still not sure what that distinctive value actually is -- i.e., what one gains from using repeda-style cards that one doesn't gain from flashcards.)

I'm not saying all this to give you a hard time. I think the market positioning issue here is interesting, and I am just raising it for you to consider if you wish.

Also, you asked "By the way have you noticed that the quiz cards on the top right are interactive?"

No, I hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out.

Best wishes for success with this.

    Did you forget the link?

Thanks for that! I've filled in both the link and the text but I didn't realise that it's either the link or the text :)

You know. This cards experience has been interesting me for a while now. With the cards, you can really create a single-handed experience where users can learn on the go in quick short experiences. I have been trying to create the same experience with https://trideate.com.

That’s interesting. Yeah, that’s what we’re trying to achieve with this.
