Hey everyone,
I am making this post to make myself accountable to make steady progress on the beta launch of Requestly Desktop app. I have compiled a list of items which I will complete and make standup update here on this thread.
Another purpose of this thread is to take feedback from the awesome IH community on what steps I am taking to beta launch the product, your feedback on landing page, feedback on anything else.
Supposedly AppImages do not support icons :-(
How did you fix the icons? What rules validation did you add?
Added featured to automatically install certificate on Windows today.
One more step closer to the release :D
Setup ESLint today. ESLint along with Prettier have been very helpful for me following the standards of experts and make sure we are following the same practices as them.
Fixed issue: "Something went wrong" on auto certificate installation on Linux. Requestly uses Certutil to install certificates onto your environment. If your Linux distribution doesn`t come with Certutil preinstalled, Requestly will silently install it for you. :-)
Added feature to use a custom PORT for web proxy. This will be helpful in case user wants to run multiple instances of Requestly.
Had a productive day today. Setup mobile view, AMP, caching, SSL, SEO, emails and forms on landing pages. Also, fixed some minor styling issues in child theme.
WordPress makes things a lot easier. Doesn't it?
Today, I added a feature to automatically apply and remove proxy from system on app startup and close, respectively. This will ensure users to focus on their web content, while running Requestly service in the background.
Tomorrow's agenda: Improve network traffic view
Fixed the bug causing PORT change upon rule modification.
Added functionality to restart Explorer process after each proxy change to apply immediate effect on Google Chrome. Users can now rely on Requestly to automatically apply and remove proxy on all apps.
One step closer to the release :-D
Brought minor improvements to UI today. Most importantly, the windows dimensions and positions. It drives me up the wall when a carefully positioned app, upon a next launch, simply resets it position and dimensions back to whatever default the app developer thought would be reasonable. A better approach is to preserve last position and apply it upon app start.
Also identified that the proxy port changes upon rules modification when available system memory is low. This may cause huge inconvenience to those running Requestly on low-end systems. Will fix this bug in morning on top priority.
Just finished setting up website for product documentation: docs.requestly.io
Things become easier with WordPress. Fast, robust and secure solution to almost every cms requirement. Knowing PHP and plugin development is like a cherry on the top.
Today was a fun day.
Also, is it a good idea to mandate collection of anonymous usage statistics? What do you think?
Imporved landing pages today. Realized how important is it to match website color scheme to your logo and product. When used correctly, color can reflect the niche and even the overall business marketing strategy.
Bonus: Some great open-source illustrations for your next project - https://undraw.co/illustrations
Today`s learning: 404 error in asar package despite valid path? Start by removing most recently installed webpack plugin
While Electron officially recommends Squirrel installer, electron-builder uses NSIS by default. I found it to be a simple and powerful tool for those who doesn`t require much customization and want to rely on built-in auto-updates feature. However, not all formats are supported by electron-builder for auto-updates on Linux platform.
