After launching last week, I am now on a mission to better understand who my early users might be and design a landing page suited for them. I set up 4 ad variants with different copy to test across 3 different audiences, all using the same basic design (see attached).
VARIANTS (ordered by # of landing page views)
AUDIENCES (ordered by # of landing page views across all ads)
SUMMARY
The best-performing ad got 2x - 5x more views and included language around beauty, anonymity, and writing. It framed the action as "trying" something new, rather than joining a community. It generally performed as well or significantly best across all three audiences. The best-performing/most cost-effective audience was worldwide, which makes sense because the U.S. has more competition for eyeballs.
NEXT STEPS
Design a landing page with these learnings in mind. They're not conclusive by any means, but it's better than nothing and helpful in honing intuition.
That's interesting Joel, it makes sense that people want to 'try before they buy'. How did users interested in TOR perform relative to just therapy and writing?
So I didn't try people just interested in Tor. Basically I used the Audience Insights tool to first look at people interested in therapy + writing, which was about 60/40 women (hence why all these audiences are women). I narrowed for folks who have an interest in therapy && writing && anonymity/Tor, so haven't just done it for anonymity/Tor yet but that's not a bad idea.
For me the primary use case is around mental health/wellness; writing open-ended stuff, just dumping thoughts and getting the therapeutic benefits. Tbh there is already at least one writing app out there that really focuses on privacy/anonymity as a value prop, and I think people who are intensely looking for that would be better served by this app (I believe the website is write.as).
Great insights Joel, thanks for sharing!
I've built a community-based platform for digital marketers to share case studies of the projects they create (https://clickthrough.marketing).
I'd love to share this as a brief case study on the platform 🙌 Let me know if you'd be happy for me to cross publish this. I'd be sure to give you credit and link to your profile & product.
Hey Lachlan! Feel free. Cool idea - reminds me a bit of Dribbble.com but for marketing case studies.
Thanks, have definitely taken some inspiration from Dribbble.
