Results from launching on Indie Hackers

Hi everyone!

I've been posting about my product 1000 Pound Club (https://1000pound.com/) here on Indie Hackers, which has generated surprisingly good traffic to my product.

Here are the results and what I learned.

Results

36% of traffic to my product has now come from Indie Hackers. This is by far the single largest source of traffic.

All of this has come from 3 posts I wrote:

Interestingly, this does not correlate with with how many views/likes each post has received. The HackerNews launch post has received significantly more views and likes than the Expectations for launch post, but has generated less traffic.

Not surprisingly, the Reddit launch post has generated the most traffic because it is by far the most popular post.

Although Indie Hackers is the largest source of page visits, I don't think it's the largest source of registered users.

How I launched

Each of these 3 posts were mostly just a brain dump of my process launching my product. Expectations for launch was literally me just worrying about launch and wanting to hear others' launch stories and advice. Results from launching on HackerNews was me reviewing a launch failure and sharing what I did wrong. Results from launching on Reddit was a success story and sharing what I did right.

Surprisingly all of these posts did very well on IndieHackers - the Reddit launch post got top post on the site over a few days while the other two got the 2nd ranked post for 1 day.

I didn't have any particular "strategy" for making these posts popular, I was just writing what I was thinking at the time. However, I do believe just the authenticity of the posts made them do well. Also, I responded to every comment, which I assume helped the posts grow.

I don't think these page visits will really impact the long-term success of my product since Indie Hackers users aren't really my target audience. But who knows? Maybe there are some powerlifters here and maybe some of my best users have come from here.

I find this serendipitous win very interesting.

What has your experience been posting on Indie Hackers? Has Indie Hackers been an effective traffic source for you?

Thanks for these insights! I'm gearing up to launch my newest project, and your article has been intersting for me.
My focus is on the menu industries, spanning everything from restaurants and bars to salons.
I had some doubts about whether platforms like Reddit and IndieHackers would be useful, but your article has definitely helped me think that it's worth a try.
    Thanks again!

We just launched Graphweaver on Hackernews using the Show HN. Results have been good:

I responded to you on the other thread already, but congrats! Do you think non-tech related projects would also launch well on HackerNews?
