Review my website?

I'm building a website and was hoping to get some feedback. Please be brutally honest, I won't get my feelings hurt.

The site is https://moviepix.app/ It's a movie discovery website/app which uses statistics/AI to learn your personality and give you personalized recommendations. It can also combine your personality with those on your "friends" list to recommend something you both would like to watch.

I like the idea but agree with most comments: use an onboarding page instead of popups for first-timers, and a less cluttered UI (too many pics and pieces, don't not where to start).

It's not ready for prime-time. But keep iterating. It's good that you posted it and made it clear it was beta. My main issue is with the site speed. It's hard to consume because the content loads slowly. I agree also that UI is far too cluttered. Try showcasing one feature at a time and have the user "step through" the experience rather then show them everything at once.

Hello there!

Some (constructive) points, feel free to ignore them ;)
- As the others have said, the home is a little overflowing with things, I needed a little time to understand what was happening and why dark phoenix whas on the list (it was the upcomming list)
- The popups are a little aggressive, on the third one I just wanted to close without even reading
- The popups appears even on pages like privacy or terms os service
- The popups appers even after I created my account and was logged in
- I don't know why, but not all covers load every time I refresh the page, I got myself waiting it to load to decide if I like (the cover) and never happened ;`(
- The icons that appears when I :hover a cover are not clear, I had to click on the "Undecided" to discover what it does
- I was expecting movies (because of the name), but you have series mixed in the categories
- Everytime i click refresh, the movies/series changes in my page, I got a little lost with that
- I got myself clicking in movies, and nothing happened, then I realised that I needed to go up and click on refresh, this should be automatic? (whenever I click in a movie that I don't like you remove it from the list and apply the matching changes?)
As the purpose is to learn my tastings, I think it would be nice to have a place with my "AI profile" or something like that, a place that I get feedback about what the site learned from my actions and see why things are being showed.
That's all for now, I created my account and will keep placing my opinions in the site to see the result, seems promising to discover movies that I missed out.

  The idea behind "refresh" is that after a user has finished looking through all their recommendations, they can tell it they want knew ones. If I automatically swapped out their movies while they were still rating, the user might feel lost. If you click "refresh" without changing any ratings, it still gives you new recommendations, because it assumes you looked through all of them & found nothing interesting.
  
  I agree the "refresh" is a little confusing. Do you have an idea how I can improve it?
  
  I previously had the movies automatically disappear when you click "thumbsDown", however I was worried about mis-clicks (especially on mobile). This way they have a chance to change their mind. Maybe I should go back to how it was?
  
  Do you have an idea what better icon I could use for undecided? I was hoping the thumbs would be self-explanatory, because I don't have a lot of room on the cover overlay to show descriptive text.
  
  Can you think of a better name that encompasses both movies & tv series?
  
  I think you're right, an "AI Profile" that explains why each movie is recommended & describes what it thinks it has learned about you would be pretty cool.
  
  Others also mentioned the annoyance of the popups, I think I'll try to combine them into a "wizard" of some sort, that a user chooses when they want to complete it.
  
  I agree the UI is a bit cluttered, I'll look for a graphics designer to help me.
  
  I'll try to fix the covers not loading.

My constructive feedback:
- The pop ups break the user experience, people develop blindness to these things and just click continue. Consider inferring favourite genres from what movies a user rates.
- There needs to be more spacing around everything (buttons, cards, etc), everything feels really cluttered and busy. Look at sites like Netflix for inspiration.
- You need some sort of branding. Use primary colours to distinguish the buttons that perform actions you most care about. The black font/borders are too harsh, you should have a more subtle tone that's easier on the eyes

  I originally was inferring genres based on what a user rates, but it felt like it took too long to give the user good recommendations.
  
  I wonder if I should combine all the popups into a "wizard" which walks them through setting up their profile. But, rather than it forcing it on them, it should just be a reminder at the top of their page that they choose to initiate when ready?
  
  I agree with the clutter/branding, I'll look for a graphics designer to help me.

Nice site speige. I agree with most people here that your site might need a bit of tweaking around the design. Seems like some of the images are not scaled right - still seems a bit grainy.

      Thanks, I do notice the images are grainy. I was trying to shrink the images to make them download faster, but I probably should reverse that. They do look scaled correctly to me though.

This sounds like a cool idea, at a glance I think the UI is pretty ugly, you should get a product designer on-board that can improve your user experience and interface.

It is a great idea with a lot of potential. However, the front page would benefit from an improved design. The grid formatting itself could be better as well as the icons. For my personal taste I didn't expect the popup questions with only the action of "done" it feels pushy, I would rather simply be invited to join and then share my preferences. I would recommend getting the help of a freelance website designer to improve these things. Best wishes for the next stages of your website!

Hi,
I'm a developer myself and I have some improvements you can make:
- Try to search up some designs and copy, because the design now isn't real good.
- When I try the used the recommendations and filtered out the horror. The first thing I got was a horror movie. So try to adjust the AI

  I wonder if you're using the "filters" backwards? If you pick "horror", it'll only show "horror" & nothing else. You have to pick what you're looking for.
  
  What can I do to make this more intuitive? Rename it to "Search" instead of "Filter" ?

    It wasn't on the filters, my bad. It was when you first get on the website. It gave me a popup asking what I liked, because i'm a new user.
    
    So I disliked the horror, kids and family. But then when I go back to the homepage. I get a section called Kids & Family. Which shouldn't be there right, because I disliked that category. Every thing else that I liked that does show up, so thats fine.
    
    Also if you want to, I can do your designs. I'm still learning a bit, but confident enough that I have the right experience.

      That makes sense. You're right, kids & family still shows up even if you dislike those genres.
      
      I agree a professional designer would help the site look better. If you're really passionate about helping on this project, let's discuss the terms. But, I'll probably look for someone in my local city so we can sit down together in person. I think discussing online communication is harder than in-person sometimes.
