Roadmap for a person with 0 experience in sales?

Assuming I have zero sales experience. However, I'm not afraid of communication in general.
What would be a good roadmap to get the first experience and feel like I'm doing ok?

I'm an IT guy who had to learn how to do sales/business the hard way.

It is entirely possible as a techie introvert to do sales and do them well, you have quite a few advantages once you get going.

    Sales is like exercise:

    • You need to do it yourself
    • The technique is not as important as the time you put into it
    • It will hurt you
    • You will want to quit
    • It will take 30 days at least
    • There are lots of miracle products/solutions/techniques, many of them bogus

There are lots of "thought leaders" for sales who lead so many sales teams and managers astray. Be wary of popular influencers who preach killer techniques and ways of doing things because selling relies on principles that have not changed in many years.

If you want, I'm happy to do a 30-minute call with you as a gift, where you can get direction on what to do next and how to make a start.

      I gratefully accept your gift.
How can I reach you? Or maybe you can write me an e-mail, I have my address available at IH profile.

Good to hear you’re eager to take a little step.

    Short answer: Fail fast.

Long answer: Try to identify your ideal persona and problem you’re trying to solve. Discover the right channel or community where your target audiences hangout. Just start conversation!

DO NOT sell anything until you built sufficient relationships and understanding of your counterparts.

Sounds vague but that how most conversation sales works.

I used to work as a sales coach and my biggest tip is to listen and meet your clients where they are. So many "professional sales people" are doing the exact opposite and while they might close some deals, they also miss many others because they're simply just too aggressive. Whether you are selling socks, coffee or a saas product you need to adapt your communication after what's relevant to your potential client, and how he/she can benefit from it - ex not focus on "it's a great product because this and that and this person is using it" but actually show them that you know how they're working and why your product is a good fit because of that.

I personally find LinkedIn as a great forum to start. It allows you to carefully research the person you want to get in touch with and the contact is pretty casual. I also find it great to publish posts which can give value to my community and contacts to show my expertise within my field!

    Good luck!

Hi, sales is the same like a dating. If the product is worth to buy - it is win-win ideal condition) could you please explain what part of sales concerns you the most? Cold outreach, VP, negotiation or closing deal?

    1. 1

There are many things at once. Keep in mind that I never participated in the sales process starting from cold outreach to the deal closed.
There are, still, some specifics I already stumble upon:
It's hard to ask for money even if you believe you can provide some value.
It's painful and stressful to get "no".
It's emotionally hard to follow up in case you don't have an answer. I guess it's egocentric, as I don't really like such behavior aimed at me.
Rationally, I can understand that it should be fine and at some point, I will get the skill. However, I feel that it's never will be the case.

I actually don't know what is VP, never negotiated or closed a deal in a context of selling

Ok, I would say the only way is to try sell something :) I believe you have an expertise in something so try to sell it as a service on freelance website:) Only practice makes sense. But it might be easier with some mentorship and “google sales basics”

Read a bunch of sales books and blogs.

Then come on here and ask to do commission only sales for IHs, however they would need to provide the tools (outreach, CRM etc)

That way you can learn for free and if you do make sales you get a commission.

I would write about your experience as well. That will most likely get you hired in a sales role.

I did read a couple of books and articles. Felt it kind of useless at my stage. They mostly targeted to people who already have experience. I don't feel like they help me.

Would you let me do sales for your company's knowing I don't have any experience?

      1. 2

I found books to be very useful.

Blog posts by Steli Efti also helped a lot.

Sure if you seemed competent, we have an agency model for https://versoly.com/ you can go out and be a reseller if you would like.
