Roast my landing page, please?

It's been two months since Memories Crate launch and the growth has been very minimal.

With the help of facebook ads I managed to get 1000 landing page visits, but with very little conversions to users.

So please, roast my landing page.

    Hi Tomas,

I agree with most of the shared comments, for me it was also (still is to a point) hard to understand what your business does, what the value prop is, what problem you are solving. I think you should go back to the drawing board and spend time to come up with a problem definition and value props that are bullet-proof and easy to understand by a 10-year-old.

As for the design, I don't mind the cartoony feel, but I will definitely go with photos of real people. Not stock photos, but real people - ask you friends and family to shoot a few photos of them and use those, it will give you a lot of credibility.

As for the idea itself, I don't think coupons is the right word. For most people, the first association with coupons is newspaper cutouts to get a few bucks off of something.

People associate this with being poor, and most of them will approach your entire idea with this subconscious negativity. I would look into how other services are defining the same term, e.g. gift vouchers, gift cards, love vouchers, friend card, etc. Try a few different ones and see how they sit across your branding.

    Hope this helps :)

Hey, it helps a lot! Thank you for the feedback.
I noted that coupon brings negativity which ruins the whole point of playful style of the website. Your recommendations are great, will try to change the copy with that in mind.

    designer here :)!

    • i think you're going for an emotional appeal angle in your header, but after reading it i don't really understand what it does and most importantly the benefits nor the problem it's trying to solve

    • nitpick: the typeface you use for your logo has a low font weight. because it's so thin i read 'memories crate' as 'memories create'

    • like that there's a clear aesthetic but if you're creating an 'experience' i dont know if cartoony is the way to go because it'd be a lot easier to visualise if you use real people (human brain likes and remembers real faces)

    • 'coupons' isn't usually a word you'd wanna use when you're 'gifting' an experience. coupons are usually about discounts, and there's almost a social taboo against gifting cheap things to other people. kinda like how brides dont want a second hand wedding ring, they usually want something new.

    • the 'how does it work' section has a lot of text and a lot of sections and immediately my brain feels overwhelmed and my eyes glaze. the pictures also don't make the steps clear (i get confused at the third one cos I feel like i'm looking at a dinner menu). also, the font weight for the dot points is a bit light, esp on the yellow background

    • pricing section doesn't actually tell me the value of what i'm buying. if i buy 20 coupons what does that allow me to do? what does 1 coupon even allow me to do? (e.g. if you're buying credits for AI prompts and it says $20 for 200 credits, you wouldn't know how much 200 credits is actually worth. does it mean you can prompt 200 times? or is it 50 credits per prompt?) help put the value of coupons in perspective for the user

    • nothing to indicate past successes (reviews, ratings, etc) which means you're not helping reduce risk for the user (which is helpful since it's a new biz and i have no reason to trust you)

good first attempts! copy is actually the hardest thing to nail. prioritise it over the visuals (as tempting as it might be to go straight into designing)

if you have twitter and wanna ask more q's, feel free to dm me on @angehyc

    happy designing!! :))

This is very valuable! Thank you for taking your time to review the page and writing the places that I should focus on.

      1. 1

all good! btw if you decide to go for a redesign and need real people, i'd rec unsplash or stills :)) a lot better than stock images (or just MJ them is the other option)

  3. 2

I spent 1 min. on the site (more than most visitors will).

    A couple of thoughts:

    1. it's still not clear to me what those coupons are, how it works, and how it benefits me to use this thing.
    2. the visual design is off. It's childish. My gut reaction is I landed on a site for kids.

    My recommendation:
Open the app to the public (no required login) until the user wants to send the coupon to someone else. Find a way to let the users explore and "invest" in your app before asking to buy. Once they understand the value and create a coupon they really want to send, they'll be more likely to pay.

Thanks for your time and feedback! Will consider following your recomendation.

Hey Tomas, first let me commend you on being smart enough to realize that something is wrong and a change is needed and brave enough to take random feedback from people on the internet. With that being said, i think what everyone may have missed even though they all had good points is that the basic idea isn't good. Coupons have a negative connotation to them to start with. So you are already starting off on a bad note. And i could go in and tell you a bunch of reasons why I think the idea isn't good but I will spare you that. There are a bunch of things on the landing page that I would change starting with the headline ( and most of the other critiques were correct), but honestly, even if you got the best expert to come in and fix everything, it still wouldn't work because your main idea/product just isn't a good idea. It's like putting makeup and lipstick on a pig. No matter how much you dress it up, at the end of the day, it's still a pig. And I think the 1000 people that came to your site proved my findings correct. The bright side is that it sounds like when you do relaunch a better idea, you have figured out the traffic part (at least to start) so with a better idea, you may be able to get some traction and hopefully that will be a homerun for you.

    1. 1

Thanks for your honesty and feedback! I would like to hear why does the coupon have negative connotation?

From my research there are two types of coupons, the ones used to get deals/groceries cheaper and the love coupons used as gifts (you can find them on canva or etsy).

So are the coupons for deals bring negativity, or? I'm really curious!

I do agree with your words that if the idea is bad, micracle wouldn't change a thing. But as my first product, I want to try out all my options and learn as much as I can in this journey.

      Thanks again for your time!

  5. 2

Love your design! But you should use different images in the pricing section.

    1. 1

Thanks for the feedback! Will make a note for that.

Hey Tomas, as a fellow founder who have experience in: distracting myself from real problem causes, looking for wrong things, doing many wrong things - I can just guess that landing page is not the problem (p.s. it looks clean and beautiful, good job on the design IMO).

I am not your target audience most likely, hence I am unsure why would personalized coupons be such an attractive customer/business need, yet again. Talk to potential users, talk to B2C marketers, etc. My best guess is that either you have not yet found your customer/user or there is no strong need for such service (sorry it can be brutal as that).

Lastly, this is just another problem to solve, you will figure it out and you will pivot or adjust current offering to match with the demand you discover.

    1. 1

Thank you for your feedback! I do feel like I'm not 100% found my target audience or I don't know how to reach the one I have in mind. Still researching and finding ways how to do it. Also thanks for positivity and motivation in your message! Hope your adventures goes well.

    Hey tomas,

Here are a few things that will INSTANTLY 10x your website

    1. The colors are not synergetic with the font, you can either change the colors to be lighter and the font to be darker or vice versa.

    2. Change the header nav to be sticky, it can make it easier and faster for the user to navigate around the website

    3. Change the font to something more "Bold" since that would make it look better for the target audience.

    4. The hierarchy is a mess, The less important an information is, the less visible it should be.

btw let me know if you X , I am may make this roast into a redesign for your website soon. 👾

    1. 1

Thanks for the advice and tips! Will need to spend some time in Figma to make this look right. And yes, my X hanld is @tomrimk, feel free to DM me there if you have any questions.

  8. 2

Perhaps adding more use cases would be helpful to understand the Why

    1. 1

Hey, thank you for the suggestion! Will check how others do it to get some insipiration and will try to add it to my page.

  9. 2

Hi Tomas I really liked the design actually

Made a zoom clip of the roast for you:

Hi Tomas, hope this roast is useful for you. 3 main points

    1. Who is this for and why do they want it?
    2. Site speed
    3. Error messages
    1. 1

Wow, I loved the video and your energy!
I appreciate the feedback and the tips, it was very valuable to see your first impressions and your thought process.

You asked very good questions and I should do a better job at answering them on the website.

      Thank you for your time!

      1. 1

        You're welcome. Good luck!

I read one comment where the roaster said the idea is just plain bad. Don't get discouraged. Maybe he's having a bad day himself.

i think he's wrong and he's thrown off by the word coupon. Yes i think coupon isn't a great word - it's used by poor people to get discounts.

So how about a different word? When i was a kid we used to get gift certificates as presents for adults who didnt really know what to buy us, but didn't want to give cash... but that word is long and i think old. How about gift pass?

        1. 1

Thank you for encouragement! It was a good insight as my outlook and experience in this world didn't warn me that the word coupon could mean something negative.

I will definetely try to find a replacement for the word coupon. It might be hard as the designs you create all look like coupons haha. Pivoting time?

          1. 2

I dont think it requires a full pivot. you've come this far... but i think you need to reposition a little. Be clear about who your target users are and what the benefits to them are - take every mention of a feature off your home page and pivot it to a mention of a benefit. @rimko.

            1. 1

"take every mention of a feature off your home page and pivot it to a mention of a benefit." - that's such a good advice!

  10. 2

Hmmmm... Visually this looks like a highschool kid designed it on like word 1997 (maybe I'm too old to see it an old design is cool again, but this doesn't look like anything modern that I've seen lately)

And what am I buying basically a page with some words on it?
    And in such big packages?
And I need to come up with the words?

What's the value for me buying it?

So when buying a gift/coupon what you should be saving me is mental load and I need something that is socially acceptable as value

I don't see this providing much value to the person buying it

People that are into the custom coupon probably want to show their hands were into it, your site would create negative value for that

I probably am not getting into you mindset with this, unless your aim was just to make the smallest thing you can think of technically, but I might just be too far from your target audience or your sales pages isn't communicating what's in your head about this

    1. 1

Thanks for the honest feedback, I appreciate it!

The idea is to have a platform where two people could exchange coupons/gifts and create a memory jar/timeline of their time together.

I recognise that this is not for everyone and I need to make it seem like I'm not giving a negative value as you said.

I do have a coupon packages in backlog to give you let's say 20 date ideas that you can just send to someone, would you see it more valuable than what you saw initially?

Again, thanks for your time, will think about what you said and try to improve things.

      1. 1

Yes if you refocus it and niche it down it would be better, if you offer pre-made coupons/packages it's better

You could gamify it somehow offering grabbing a random coupon from a different card pack. (Probably both options to fit more ppl)

Take inspiration from existing couple games/advice

IDK about the memory/timeline idea, maybe you see something I don't, but I'm not that likely to come back to some niche gift site for recollection

  11. 1

    Hey here some feedback:

    1. I struggled to understand your value proposition and why anyone should use the tool, try making the main message clearer in the header
    2. Use a bolder font for the logo to avoid confusion in reading the name.
    3. Use real people in pictures to make it feel more real and memorable.
    4. Explain what buying "coupons" really gives the customer.
    5. Add customer reviews to show it's trustworthy and others liked it.
