Hi everyone, I'm working on a new side project: https://smilepostcards.co/
Can you roast my homepage and tell me if there is anything that is not clear? I'm looking for honest feedback. Go ahead, you won't hurt my feelings.
Thanks!
Hey man, great stuff! Instead of typing out a big paragraph of stuff, I went ahead and recorded a quick 10-minute video with a few thoughts.
(Why should you care? I've been in user experience design for nearly 15 years, and also host an event called the Homepage Throwdown where we critique landing pages and homepages in front of hundreds of people at conferences, events, etc.)
Hope it's helpful! Check out the video here: https://www.loom.com/share/9f08ec0869e74156bb556dde62f26e2b
oh my god man, that was AMAZING!
I agree especially on the FAQ section. I took some of your advice and redesigned the homepage a bit. Let me know what you think!
Thank you so much for doing this.
Huge improvements! Great work dude, I'll have to jump on and send a postcard soon!
Please do and let me know about the experience ๐
The site is very thorough and clear. I think the only thing it's missing is pics/videos of the actual product. I was wondering if you could write a message - once I clicked through to send postcard I saw that you can, but that would have been instantly super clear with a photo/video.
hey Laura, great shout. I'm thinking maybe the hero image could have both the front and the back of the postacard. what do you think?
Serious question: would use it right now? Maybe to send a postcard to a distant family member or friend or partner. If not why?
I actually just tried to send one! But my photo was vertical so it didn't work. I found the biggest barrier was choosing the photo. Had to look through my google photos, choose one, then I felt I needed to crop it, then I felt I needed to edit the colors. For me it feels like something I should do (my use case is sending a photo of my kids to their grandparents abroad) but is hassle.
hey Laura, thanks for feedback! it appears editing the photo is a recurring feedback. I will definitely look into making some basic editing (rotating, cropping, etc) simple.
As for choosing the photo, I'm not sure what I can do to help you here...
I've made SmilePostcards accessible via mobile so that you can easily pick a photo from your mobile. What do you think?
Is it SimplePostcards or Smilepostcards?
Serious question: would use it right now? Maybe to send a postcard to a distant family member or friend or partner. If not why?
I would use it. But I don't know their address off the top of my head. And I don't have a picture I want to send them. Those are the 2 barriers.
yeah, quite difficult without those things :)
it's SmilePostcards, there was a typo in the homepage ๐
I think it looks great and simple. If I were to buy a postcard I would probably need to see a little more information to make it seem trustworthy. There is no top navigation or footer leading to T&C's or an 'about us' section etc. That was my first impression.
Nice clean design :)
Hi Rusty, thanks for the feedback. There is actually a section about me on the home. did you see that? cheers
No worries, yes I saw that down the bottom and it gives most of the info I need. I just found my eyes scanning looking for some more links to qualify the site. For this sort of site I usually scan for an 'about us' page and maybe some FAQs.
e.g - How long will it take for my postcard to be delivered? What countries can I send to?
This information might already be on the page. I just find myself habitually looking for an about/faq section as that's usually where most of the answers to my questions are.
Hope that helps!
Hey @Manu66,
I think you did a lot right on this landing page. Really well done. The tone is great, visuals are great all the way down to the font choices.
Aside from another typo in here "My boy friend and I are doing the "long distance thing" but with SimplePostcards we feel much closer to each other.", there isn't a lot that I'd change.
If I were to change anything, I would use your headline to "paint the picture" a little more.
The message is great, it's concise and compelling enough to make me want to read more but it's not as emotionally weighted as the rest of the copy. It could also be used on a number of services, e.g. online comedy course, practical joke site, etc.
I'd try something like this:
Headline:
"That smile on their face when they know you're thinking of them."
(Paints a picture of the end result. More intimate. Also hints at what your service does, while still being just mysterious enough to prompt the user to keep reading)
Subheadline:
"A postcard is the old fashion way to say 'I was thinking of you'. Send a SmilePostcard to your friends and family, anywhere in the world"
CTA:
"Make somebody you care about smile ->"
"Send a smile ->"
You could try some variations on the cta. Maybe a two line button like so:
(smaller font): "Make somebody smile"
line break
(larger font): "Send a SmilePostcard today"
Not a big change but I changed your CTA color to #785A79, which I pulled out of the purple orb in your logo. For me, it added some needed continuity by connecting your logo to the cta, which points to the postcard on the right that also shares some purplish tones.
I would also recommend adding some more padding on the columns in the FAQ to let them breathe a little more. I bumped it up to 1.25rem and it helped. That's just me though.
Overall, this is really nice. I hope it takes off!
hey Davey, thanks for the great feedback! I'm going to play with copy a little bit more, I liked your inputs.
Awesome. Glad to help. It's already good, so not much to do.
Look good, what went in creating the product?
what do you mean? tech stack?
Yes :)
Rails backend. Front-end is a VERY simple Vue app.
It looks great. I would say add another CTA after the FAQ section. So that once the user scrolls to the bottom. They can take action immediately without having to scroll back up.
good shout about adding a CTA at the bottom of the page ๐
Serious question: would use it right now? Maybe to send a postcard to a distant family member or friend or partner. If not why?
Don't think I would use it. I live in India and postcard is not part of the culture here.
thanks for the insight
Hey @Manu66, I was feeling that maybe the fonts can be slightly bigger.
On my 15inch Macbook Pro, with everything centralised, it seems abit small.
mm... in theory it should resize ok because I use REM. Can you send me a screenshot?
Serious question: would use it right now? Maybe to send a postcard to a distant family member or friend or partner. If not why?
Right now, I wont.
I dont think I am your target audience.
This homepage's mother was a hamster and it's father smells of elderberries. Is that a good roast?
It's clear, gets the idea across but I might go shorter on words and longer on photos. This is an impulse feel good sign up
A friend of mine had a similar business called awwstamps it would send your grandmother (or whomever) a postcard from your Facebook photos. Proved difficult to make profitable. I hope you'll do better.
hey Brecth, yeah agree I can add more photos.
Interesting about your friend's business. Why did it prove difficult to make it profitable?
Serious question: would use it right now? Maybe to send a postcard to a distant family member or friend or partner. If not why?
Customer acquisition cost was the challenge. Hard to find customers profitably.
I personally wouldn't use it but I don't think I'm the demographic so doesn't matter.
As I recall young mothers were his target market. You need a target market.
thanks for the insight. Why do you think you're not the right target?
I'd turn that around and ask why would you think I am?
Or, better, who is your target market?
