Roast this idea

I wanna create a cohort-based course where I teach people how to build a website that gets organic traffic (SEO).

Students will get a working, blank website which I'll set up as part of the course. Hosting paid for for a year.

We'll work on how to do everything needed for the website to rank and get (free) organic traffic.

Roast this idea pls.

I would pay for this

People want to solve their own problems, not work on a sandbox problem. But I do like the idea of a year long course that grows/changes/evolves as people grow and changes tactics. Perhaps like 12 different focuses within SEO over the course of a year, with a guide to walk you through hand in hand, and a group to be accountable to.

CXL is something like $1,500 a year.
Growth Mentor is close to $1,000 a year.

10 people pay $1,000 a year to go hard on SEO one tactic each month seems reasonable if they are already making $2k to $5k per month, and have a sizeable amount of room to grow their SEO.

For me at least I can say there's a HUGE amount of SEO my google sheets tutorials can eat up, but I just don't have the bandwidth to do it. I'd be down to pay $1,000 to a freelancer to boost my inbound traffic a few clicks per day that lead to sales. 1 sale a day is close to $3k revenue a month for me. And that's $12k a year I'd be spending on a freelancer to boost my SEO. but adding $1k to that year to know I"m leading properly is a no-brainer.

I'd second Andrew's point about 'solving their own problem'. I would pay if you helped the cohort to build a website for a specific idea they had in mind. Hence the takeaway is knowledge + something tangible. Good luck!

        Thanks Java! Makes sense yes!

      Thanks for your feedback, Andrew!

Interesting how you look at this endeavor! I had something else in mind, but that's the great thing about receiving feedback. Let's see what other people's views are!

I like the idea. Of course, you'll have to spend time creating trust around you, and a big part of why I would buy it would be because I can see you have succeeded before or multiple times and found the formula.

If you can play on the fact that people will get their return on their investment back before they know it, I would say it's a no-brainer.

    Go for it.

I made multiple 6 figures with SEO and have proof so that shouldn't be a problem ;-) Thanks for your feedback Philip!

I had no doubts you knew what you were talking about. I had a feeling you were an expert. I just wanted to mention it 🙌 🚀

I like the idea to get people started on the right foot with SEO. Here's what I could see as objections:

    • You need to write consistently to get a page ranking. I'd struggle with that, and I know that I would - so you'd need to present me with a reason why I would be able to create the content needed.

    • I wouldn't know how to monetize the site once it started ranking. If it's a blank site, do I need to create a course, write sponsored (or paid) newsletters, or do I run ads or do affiliate marketing? Would your cohort cover this?

    • While I love the idea of niche sites as passive income vehicles and know how to build them, I am not pursuing that endeavor to not interfere with my current projects. How would your course students handle that after the cohort is over?

Overall, it's a really valuable idea but might be a bit too rough or broad yet.

Hope this is helpful (and good to connect here, too!)

I personally don't like learning with other people, it's a bit too slow for me. I would pay for a well-done video+text course that covers this though.

Your reach would also be much greater than with cohorts that you have to coach one-on-one.

If you want, you can test it out on me with just the text syllabus. Send me some instructions and I'll follow them to the letter. Then when I have 'x' amount of traffic, I'll record a video testimonial for your site.

Also, you should do this with about 100 people. Give the course away to them for free in exchange for a video testimonial detailing how much traffic we're getting, complete with screencasts of our websites and adwords payouts.

Then just start posting those video testimonials on your business's twitter account, facebook page, and youtube account.

Interesting viewpoint Matt! Thanks for your feedback.

I’ll have prerecorded videos and text syllabuses too. I think the value of the cohort is in meeting people, and creating a bit of a community feel so you can help each other.

Also, how will your course differ from the 7k+ courses with the keyword 'seo' on udemy?

        https://www.udemy.com/courses/search/?src=ukw&q=seo

Why would I buy your course instead of just picking up a few of these and watching them this weekend?

      2. 1

Yeah, for sure. Happy to help.

What could be achieved in a cohort that you couldn't do with a slack channel?

A slack channel opens up the discussion to all your customers, regardless of the time they took your course. And you aren't limited to cohort size. Or forcing time constraints like start dates.

I just think having cohorts might turn a lot of people off to the idea since most people just want to knock out a course over a weekend or two to learn the thing as quickly as possible and get on with their lives.

People like to do things on their own time. They want things on demand. We don't wait until Thursday night at 8pm to watch a show anymore, we stream it right now. That's how the most successful courses do it also. Copy them.

The only time you could benefit from cohorts is if you are having group projects. But even then, everybody hates group projects. Especially for something like what you want to make, which definitely doesn't need group projects.

Unless you absolutely need group projects, I would avoid having cohorts.

True, as long as people are looking for stuff on search engines, which seems to be long into the future, SEO is a key skill. I read somewhere that if you have two skills, SEO and content writing you can make money today. I believe it is true.

    1. 1

      Yeah definitely!

      I can make two plays.

One: for people who don’t have a project yet and want to make something together with an experienced SEO guy.

Two: for people with an existing project to help them rank it.

Like the idea and how you'll be building from scratch.

But what would stop me from paying is (tho I'd pay for it if I am into SEO)..

    1. I assume (since you said hosting to be paid for a year and SEO is a long game) it'll stretch for 3-4 months. I don't know if I want to buy something that depends on if I'll have time for it on a regular basis.

    2. I'd prefer buying something that either gives me all knowledge altogether (like course) or is quick cohort learning with everyone (like 30 days)

Pros however is that I might be able to set up my website wirh organic traffic along with the course itself, which I think is a VERY BIG PRO. Especially for starting business people or people who want to learn SEO for providing service and earning from it.

But the deficiency of immediate ah I've got the course, now im gonna make it gratification might stop me. We love things fast ;)

    1. 2

Thanks for your Arunima! The cohort would be 30 days, and the hosting would last a year.

        Then you've got a customer!
