“I can make more money with software development services.”
While custom development services bring more money, SaaS boilerplates are digital products. They scale better than your time. You can offer both to get the best of both worlds.

“If I can build SaaS faster than competitors, why should I help them do the same?
Others are turning their SaaS development expertise into boilerplates. People can buy from them and catch up with you. The difference is that you won’t get paid. Others will.

The problem about this article is that was written by someone who doesn’t have any idea about software development leaning heavily into an AI for content.

Creating an update mechanism for your boilerplate is far from trivial, so that’s why it’s not often done, if ever. That means you still end up with custom development anyway so that’s why people prefer to make their own.

I've been using SaaS Boilerplate by Apptension. It's a free and open source version that they supposedly use for developing for their clients.

I picked this project as it's a free boilerplate with react and django.

It's been really great so far. I picked apart some bits that I wasn't fond of, but overall it's saved me time and pointed me on the right path for a lot of aspects of the project.

    Generally I kept the

    • navigation and layouts
    • react & TS build process
    • templated sign up, log in, and password reset pages

    And scrapped

    • AWS build process (went with Render after a fair bit of trial and error on AWS and an accidental $25 bill for all my failed builds 🤣)
    • Their email sending strategy
    • GraphQL

I have yet to implement the payment processing, it did seem to be working at first but I don't need it for the first iteration of my app, so time will tell how helpful that setup is!

Overall I would have preferred something a little less over-engineered as I'm just using it for solo projects, but I'd say it's a good option for anyone looking for this tech stack.

The problem with the SaaS Boilerplate is that the pricing cannot be high. Then it won't sell. That's the reason, most of the SaaS Boilerplates just scratch the surface with common features 1) Auth 2) Email 3) Admin Panel 4) Stripe Integration etc

I have built a Flexible Fast Code Business Application Platform called PrestoFox. I am resisting myself to sell it as a digital product because the amount of effort that I have put don't directly match the pricing that I could sell for.
