Indie hackers and Saas founders still following generic SEO advice would drive away potential clients more than they attract one.
You must have heard this:
Use the right keywords, write clickbait titles, use alt tags, etc.
Unless you are a lifestyle blogger,
These tips would only help you fill vanity metrics and
make you feel good about yourself without actually getting anyone to take the action you want.
And I’ve seen this happen over and over again-
And how you are proactively driving them toward the action you want them to take.
Don’t get me wrong-
Following SEO best practices is a good way to start
But staying at that level is doing the bare minimum.
You are going to get swallowed
So what do you do instead?
It is very simple-
“Write to that one person that needs what you are selling”
For Instance,
With headlines-
Instead of finding a way to stuff in the relevant focus keyword,
Do this instead;
Craft a headline you know would appeal to your ideal customer persona.
Meaning,
You need to have an Ideal customer profile in mind when you create content pieces.
This is more than just knowing your target audience
And having the right keywords.
Also, Intros should be contextual.
Make the customer believe you are about to help solve their problem.
I can go on and on but here’s the point-
Keywords are road signs to guide you on what to focus on.
Ask yourself-
What are the motivations behind the keywords?
What are the pains, fears, and frustrations a customer thinks of as they type a keyword?
What are they trying to achieve?
What job are they trying to do? (Think JBTD)
Unless you can align your product, features, and offerings to these motivations,
Writing only to rank would not drive the real required outcome you want.
Also, use storytelling scripts to drive home your point.
You want to stand out from the rest of the competition,
Not sound like the rest of the competition.
You'd also want to include the right CTAs at strategic points in your content.
The CTAs need to make sense and be organic.
Don’t write for a keyword & include a CTA unrelated to what you are addressing,
I see this a lot in SaaS blog posts.
Just know this,
Your goal is not just to rank, but to earn consumer mindshare.
What would you gain if you rank for a keyword only for readers to-
bounce off your page almost immediately and forget you ever existed?
I’ll leave you with this tiny bit.
You can keep following SEO tips for bots to rank you better
Or you can follow these tips for humans(your potential customer) to love you better and pay you even better.
SEO is a beginner's game.
I help SaaS founders and B2B marketers create compelling story-led content pieces that not only rank but pull at the heart of your readers to take the action you want.
