Satellite projects: Host on product's domain or own domain?

Some projects create free web apps to drive traffic to their main product. For example, there's edit.photo which drives traffic to Pintura. I think I've heard that Veed has also done this kind of thing.

I'm preparing something similar for my own project.

I'm wondering if I should host it on my product's domain/website or create a separate domain for it.

Considerations for product's domain (e.g. myproduct.com/some-free-tool)

  • Links to satellite project increase domain reputation
  • Satellite project benefits from existing domain reputation

Considerations for own domain (e.g. my-free-tool.com)

  • I can put keywords in the domain name
  • It's less advertisy and might be shared more often
  • It's potentially easier to remember

Would you host a satellite project on its own domain or on the main product's domain?

If the main goal with these satellite projects are pure marketing you definitely should put them under your main domain

That's what I've done now. Thank you for commenting :)

If the goal is promote you, the use your domain.
Else, I'll go with product domain

Hosting a satellite project on its own domain offers branding flexibility and potentially higher shareability. However, leveraging the main product's domain can boost domain reputation and simplify management. Consider your branding strategy and long-term goals when making this decision

I just had this same internal conflict and decided that making it an extension of my main domain is better off for me. It'll help build SEO and hopefully attract new users.

Also think about Canva, they have a million different tools under one brand and it seems every time I am looking for a new feature they're the first site to pop-up and now it seems they run everything multimedia.

Yeah, I'm also tending towards doing it on my own main domain. Thanks for your input!
