Seeing lots of signups but no conversions

A few weeks back I launched React Togglr, a feature flagging service for React js projects. I've been seeing a good amount of folks signing up, but not converting to paid accounts - and I think it's b/c I required payment upfront without getting to play around.

Today I've changed this and added free accounts totally until I can figure out how I'd like to charge for a more "premium" service.

I was always under the impression though that giving your work away for free is a bad idea. Has anyone else experienced this before? What's your opinion on giving away your product for free?

Hey Christian! I know how it feels when most of the people visit your website, take the free plan and disappear. But you're not alone and it's completely fine.

Evernote, Hootsuite, Buffer, LinkedIn almost every big startup has faced this issue.
Give them sometime, always be open to feedback, keep adding more features to the premium version.

If nothing works, you can limit the free trial to 7 days(experiment), give free access to some users, introduce a refer your friend and get free 30 days when they buy. The methods are all out there, you just need to stay consistent and never give up. :)

You can also have a free trial for maybe 7 days , and to extend it further users must perform an action ( fill a feedback form, post on social media, or something else )

Hi Christian, I went through this and still do with Reftab.com - What you need to do is find what parts of your service your users find valuable.

Give users a taste of it, let them see first hand how it improves their daily lives. Then, figure out a way to limit that, then charge for it. The process is almost never ending, and does take time. You'll get there.

I saw some good responses here about talking with customers, this is a great thing to do pretty much throughout the entire time of you being a business owner.

    Hey Christian.

DON'T just chuck a free plan out there and hope for the best.

A free plan can be a good way to market, but what you need is 'Why are people not converting'?

A free plan can't just tell you that.

You need to identify 10 people who 100% should be using your product then actually talk to them. Ask them to sign up, and if they don't, ask them why.

You need to learn right now.

Don't just keep making pricing and product changes.

    Talk to people.

I would recommend allowing them a free account for a period of time(7 days or 2 weeks as per your choice). After which you may ask them to upgrade by personally getting their feedback. This will help in understanding who your potential customers are?
You may even automate this process by sending out an email and asking them their feedback after 7 days through the Typeform survey.
We at Berlocks.com have implemented this methodology to understand a member's interests and behavior before converting them to a customer.
