Some people sell software on itch.io. itch.io is a popular platform for games and related assets. Is there a similar platform for software?
Do you mean similar platform for software or for hardware? I think there might be many platforms to sell both hardware and software. Some maybe specific, some maybe generic. Is there anything specific you are looking for? For example, https://store.steampowered.com/ sells games online, among other things related to games. Another basic cliche example for selling software and hardware is the popular ecommerce websites - Amazon, EBay and what not
Thanks a lot :)
Amazon sounds great. How is it to sell software on amazon? Is there anything I should be aware of?
edit: my software are not game, or music related, they are more like helpers for other developers.
Once published on amazon, is it possible to release updates and bugfixes?
Ah. Upgrades, bug fixes...like that. Well, I have seen people sell disks of software on Amazon. For example Anti Virus like Kaspersky and Operating Systems like Windows OS. But I was just checking in Amazon if it's surely true or it's just me imagining. Turns out it is still possible to sell CD-ROMs on Amazon which contain Software, and I also noticed just now that people send license code over email with no CD. So that's one way too which is interesting.
Come to think of it, to keep things easy - like install, upgrade with features and bug fixes, license based is easier. One cannot use CDs and other disks in this era to distribute software, especially if you want to provide multiple upgrades in a month or week or even a day!
I forgot that there are more platforms for selling software with the concept of licenses. For example there's Gumroad - https://gumroad.com/ . I haven't used it though to sell stuff. I haven't sold software or anything online, including on Amazon, so no idea how the experience is when it comes to selling on Amazon
I haven't checked much about licenses, but it's the popular thing that people do for selling software. Some examples are Sublime Text - though free has a way to purchase and enter a license, another example is IntelliJ IDEA paid IDE. I think helper tools are a popular kind of software in this era. Surely you can sell it on Gumroad like platforms which help you licensing features. I don't know much about how licenses work and how to ensure people don't game the system, so that's something to beware of, but I do know that Gumroad can help you with licenses, like, they have a license server and have integration with payment system etc, so you won't have to worry about hosting license server etc I think
This is an interesting topic that I like. I remember wondering about how to sell server software with license and also ensure that people don't share licenses and use the server etc, or host multiple instances of the server etc. It's a bit tricky I guess 😅 But anyways, good luck with your business! :)
