Selling starter kits / boilerplates / themes / admin dashboards
Anybody here sell starter kits or admin dashboards?
I'm working on SugarKubes.io, a marketplace to buy and sell code and I'm looking to help those who are already selling code sell more.
There won't be any transaction fees, I just need help bootstrapping the marketplace.
Interesting. I hate the yes.png by the way, not sure if others do. Rest of the website looks great though. Also not sure why it asks to connect to my github account, but I don't like the idea of that without understanding why.
Anyways I am sure tons of people would be interested if you found them.
So are you selling open source software? I don't quite understand.
I've updated the landing page to hopefully address some of your concerns.
Think of it as a way to attach a business model to a private github repo. We don't sell open source software. We sell access to private repos.
Does that make sense?
Everything is done through github so we ask users (who are not selling) for just their email, and for sellers we ask for more permissions (because we have to be able to control the private repo, add users after they buy it, etc).
This is awesome! I am interested, at least testing out how it works. It did occur to me, however, that Github caps private repos at 1, if I understand correctly. Personally I am already using this and have yet to move it. Something like a Gitlab or Bitbucket sign in might be useful to get around this limitation. Probably something you have planned coming down the pipeline, but for me personally I would need that to even get started / test the setup. Cheers!

GitHub now offers unlimited free private repos so you should be able to get started.
If you do start selling seriously you'll need to upgrage though :/
I actually did start off this project as a private gitlab implementation, but the problem was that nobody signed up. The signup rate through GitHub is so so so much higher.
I do think long term GitLab is a better backend for me but for now, I'm just trying to seed the marketplace with useful code.

Hey, this is something I've always been interested in (starting a marketplace for code and related assets), I never followed through with it though as I thought it'd be too big an undertaking.
SugarKubes looks interesting - I'll definitely keep an eye out. One thing that I still have trouble understanding is how envato virtually has no competition. Especially when most templates on themeforest are clones of each other and codecanyon is little more than a glorified WordPress plugin marketplace.
Other than that, GitHub seems to be the only large source for template code. Do developers not value their work or something? 🤔
I agree that it is weird Envato doesn't have that much competition.
Perhaps I just haven't pushed hard enough on it. It's been pretty easy to get people to sign up but it's been very difficult finding developers who want to list something for sale.

On that note, have you heard of https://git.market/? I put my name on their mailing list like 2 years ago lol. Looks like they never even launched but are still holding the domain.
Yeah I saw them, and yes you're right it looks like they never got it off the ground. I can understand why, marketplaces are damn hard to get started.
